I have been working at a clothing stores for 3 years and I am so tired of doing the same thing all the time. So tired of waiting on people and just standing around like a dumb ass. Luckily right now i have an okay manager but the boss is an asshole who thinks rules the world. I am just so tired of it all I want a job where I can use my brain rather than standing up for more than 5 hours at a time. I need DREAM to pass badly I am just so depressed. My work depresses me and I hate it but I have no other option. So question, once DREAM passes along with CIR or not how many months are we going to have to wait in order to start applying?? And how long there after will we get our visa/permit?

Even if or when the DREAM act passes, we will still have to wait about 6yrs before we even get to the possibility of permits. I know you hate your job and you are tired of working there. I have been working at a restaurant for SEVEN years and I can't stand it. However, I have used my time and money wisely. What have you done with those three years? I hope something positivie so that WHEN the DREAM act goes through and those six years pass, you are stronger and ready to take on the world at your highest potential. The money I have made working at the restaurant I used to put myself through graduate school. Those years waiting should not be wasted, regardless of immigration status. Be positive and use the time wisely. I know it sucks. Trust me I know. I feel exactly what you feel and everyone on this forum knows how you feel. But, if you let the depression get you it will only eat you alive and kill your spirit. So, be positive and don't let this situation beat you. Turn the coin on them and use this time to get stronger, smarter, wiser. Be depressed today but tomorrow go for it. You can do it. =)

What permits are you talking about?

From what I understand, the six year wait time is for your Green Card. During that time you're granted conditional legal residency and have to fulfill specific requirements before getting said GC (i.e. Associates degree, Bachelor's degree, good moral character, etc.)

During that conditional period, while waiting for your GC, you'll get a social security number and a work permit after filing your paperwork with USCIS. The wait time to get that is going to be much shorter than the overall wait time for the GC.

There is no specific time line yet, but it will be addressed in DA/CIR when it is passed.

@ari88:
Everyone has bad days. You're working, which is something that many DREAMers cannot do. I understand your job can be frustrating, but try to look on the brighter side. Being able to work affords you a greater degree of independence than most of us.

Take a step back. Things will get better.

Regardless if it will take 2 or 3 or 6 yrs. If the DREAM act passes (if), they are not going to be handing out social security numbers withing months of that like there is no tomorrow. The point of the message was to not hold your breadth and wait with your arms crossed. Even if the DREAM act passes in a year, still do something with your life. Overall, as they say, the reason why many disagree with the DREAM act is that they feel that we would be cutting in line if front of all those that came here legally. SO, hen and if it passes, we will be placed behind them. When the DREAM act passes all of us will stil have to wait a while.

Of course we're going to have to wait for a period of time after the bill is passed. The bill will specifically say when the application process will begin. It could say 6 months after the bill is passed we can begin the application process or it could say 2 years. But according to the Gutierrez bill, we will be given social security numbers and work authorization documents as apart of our conditional legal residency. Within that time frame, USCIS has to stream line their current system so that people can't say that we're undercutting people who are legally immigrating to the U.S.

Once we have fulfilled the requirements outlined in the bill, we'll be granted permanent legal residence. This was one of the questions that was addressed in the CIR ASAP conference call hosted by Dream Activist.org last week.

Yup, be aware that there are some sitting idle at home w/o a job. I'd rather sit idle and get paid than sit idle and pay bills. You may also wish to ask your manager for a job that is more active like doing stock, cleaning around, or God knows what else, which will keep your hands busy and your brain from self-torturing. Alternatively, you can learn to go "zen" as I like to call it, which entails staring at a point in space and sleep with your eyes open.
