i talked to my lawyer today and he said that if i were to leave the US, i would face the 10 year ban. he also said that there are ways of leaving the US so that they would not know that I overstayed my visa. I think he talked about leaving through Canada... i can't recall all the details.

does anyone know anything about this?

Perhaps you can indeed get into Canada on something like a passport from your country or you might have to apply for a travel visa or something and then take a plane from Canada to wherever. Technically, I can see this working but not being all that easy to do.

Here is more info if you will need a VISA to visit Canada or not:

Maybe you can leave without them knowing about your status but how would you come back to the states? You cannot come back here legally since they won't have the record of you ever getting out of the states.

say you get to canada...will you be legal there? there are illegals in canada you know! you wouldn't want to be one of them. maybe what he tried to say was go back to your country....get a travel/student/work visa to Canada...get legalized there and then apply to the US (worker/student visa) as a Canadian citizen/legal resident. but it would be a long process you know and also costly. and if you become legal in Canada why come to the US?!
