I don't know if I'm the only one, but have you told anyone about your situation (being undocumented) and the person then just told you that you're pitying yourself?

To me, self pity means that you convince yourself that you can't do something that, when in reality, you are capable of doing. In the context of our limitations as undocumented immigrants, does that apply to us? I'm just tired of some people telling me to stop feeling sorry for myself when I just tell them about how things really are. Has anyone else here been in a situation like this?

I've been in situations where I share some personal information and the feedback I would hear is "no one owns you anything", and when I sit there later throughout the day and think about that saying. I try to understand how this country is willing and so giving on educating some and just not pay attention to future issues on higher education.
Sometimes is the person you share things with. Some of them don't have much to say about the situation, some can't imagine and some don't try to learn about it.

I'll try talking to a priest next time, lets see what the ears of a religious being has to say about this. Is worth the try. If there is no money for therapy on depression, I wanna hear what a god follower has to say about this.

I've been told that if I were smart enough and worked hard enough, believed in myself, stop pitying myself, etc., I would be able to find a way to have a good career that pays well, despite being undocumented. Maybe there are some who find loopholes, but this simply doesn't happen for most of us. I know undocumented people and regularly seek out articles about young people in our situation. All I see are people whose talents go to waste because there are so few opportunities available to us.
THANK YOU! That's exactly how I feel as well, and I'm pretty glad to know that I do have my head screwed on just fine for the concept of self-pity. And I do the same thing about looking for the articles, always good to have a stock of information to spread awareness on the issue.

theres a lot of ignorance out there. for example, practically EVERYONE asks me "why don't you just take the citizenship test?", like it's some kind of simple option that i've been too lazy to do.
i just have to take a deep breath and explain things to them.

Lol someone told me once "why don't you go to the office and get a ss#" and i just sighed. Its crazy how many people are so uninformed especially the people we hang around with. All my close friends and my bf know about my situation and sometimes i do get "you know you're not the only person with problems" and it does make me upset. Yes we can try our best and try 10x's harder than our peers in order to be the best we can be but at the same time we can only try so much because no matter how much we try we will always have that line that we can't cross, and across the line can be a life changing opportunity.

Years have passed and for the first time in my life, I felt I have lost so much value of the great saying 'what if'. 'What if' I would've gone to college, or 'what if' the people I knew didn't depend on others for help, 'what if' I would've been the one making partners with a firm at a young age?

People have gone and started their life. Some have a family and those I have yet heard of probably have a house somewhere, living the 'American Dream'. What is that anymore?
Being undocumented has taught me to be graceful, giving, thoughtful, open minded, self educated, strong. But I've also learned how selfish, envious, racist this country can be.

I don't know what it is to be me. I wanted something for everyone, for myself. For the ones that would go to the extreme for it. This 'Dream' has been alive for so long, and yet, the living dream is unfamiliar.

We have not lived. How many times does the 'Dream Act' come to mind a day?

Yes ignorance is prevalent among the American public.

I once shared my situation with my pastor and he told me to stop having a pity party!

I couldn't believe my ears. At the time I thought it was a God-inspired comment but later on I realized how it was a bunch of bull. I wasn't have a pity party--I was in need of help.

We are in a horrible situation. They are half right we shouldn't let this weigh us down into depression.

But how can we accomplish our goals when we don't even have the right to work, go to school, or even drive!

I think 'the Dream Act' needs a new path this year.

I have people tell me that I just need to "apply" to take the "test" to become a US citizen. This coming from middle aged well educated Americans. This is why the immigration debate doesn't get any airtime in national news. Most Americans think the system is working great. When I realized this, I started telling people that I am American, so this conversation stays simple.
