Would you be interested in tutoring adults? There are lots of literacy programs out there that badly need volunteers to teach reading/writing, GED prep, and ESL to adults. These places often don't even do background checks,; it's more important that you come across as nice, trustworthy, well-spoken, and not crazy on the little interview... I understand why a background check would be required when working with children or at a hospital, but it's really not important when tutoring grownups. The programs are too grateful for the help.

major hospitals also require one, in addition to knowing that you are eligible to WORK in the US.

Also if you ever wanted to work somewhere like the ER, you need to get a background check.

I tried volunteering for a university's accounting department but I couldn't because of these USCIS regulations:

The following describes the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) interpretation of the concept of “work” versus “volunteering.”
• A foreign national cannot perform work as a volunteer in a position that would normally be a paid position or if the foreign national believes that
some form of compensation will follow. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) views such volunteering as “work” and requires
proper employment authorization issued by that agency. This specifically includes volunteering by a foreign national for a trial period leading up
to compensated employment.
• [A]n applicant for a change of status may not offer his or her services to a prospective employer, even on a volunteer basis. The employment is
unauthorized as long as the alien derives any benefit from it. (Lawrence J. Weinig, INS Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Adjudications, 66 NO.
19 Interpreter Releases 539)
• In addition, the volunteer rule may give rise to a number of potential abuses. For example, may an employer lawfully suggest to an alien that he or
she should do a period of 'volunteer' work while the employer is deciding whether or not to file a nonimmigrant visa petition or a labor certification
application? Recently, the INS indicated that an applicant for change in nonimmigrant status could not offer his or her services to a prospective
employer on a 'volunteer' basis. The INS has stated that: 'If any type of benefit could accrue to the alien, though it may not be wages or fringe
benefits, the services will be considered unauthorized employment.' (89-05 Immigr. Briefings 1)
• Volunteer services for a prospective employer constitute unauthorized employment if the alien will ultimately derive some benefit from the work.
The ultimate question in most volunteer cases will be: What did the alien expect in return? If he or she expected compensation, reward, or future
benefit, then the volunteer work probably violates status. (95-05 Immigr. Briefings 1)

While I was perusing volunteer websites, I found this: http://www.volunteermatch.org. This website has the option to search for virtual volunteer opportunities. I thought I would share this for those who don't have the means to travel.

I had the same problem. I wanted to Volunteer at UCLA medical..and they wanted to do an FBI background check..I was more concerned with having to show my expired license and they would realize I was "foriegn" and then ask for some type of visa to allow me to volunteer..Glad some of you guys had success...I guess its worth a shot to try anyway.

I had the same problem when I wanted to volunteer at the hospital (I am a nursing major, so I wanted experience). I think the reason they ask for SSN and background checks is because they need to make sure the people who are dealing with sick people/children/etc are not weirdos. I guess I can understand that, even though that stinks for me!

I was able to get involved with the Humane Society here in Tallahassee. They made me fill out a very short form (no SSN). I foster animals for them (usually small kittens!) and do some volunteer work for them through school events (concession stands, beer booth, etc). It has worked great for me, and I love doing it! Maybe you could look into that?

P.S: I know different counties have different forms, so if one county denies you, don't be afraid to apply to the next county if it is close enough to you!

Also, you might want to talk to them about your specific situation. Maybe even lie and say you are not comfortable giving out your SSN but you are willing to give them all other info. I know these places (at least here) are ALWAYS needing volunteers because they are non-profit. Kitten season is around the corner, and I bet they will be desperate for people wanting to help!
