I live in Texas and have a driver's license that expires on my 24th birthday this year (April). As many of you know, driver's license requirements have changed for the worse in Texas, so I won't be able to renew it here. DA and CIR seem to be on the backburner for the time being, so it's time to think outside the box.

This is what I'm thinking about doing to fix my DL problem: rent an apartment under my name in New Mexico for a couple of months, get some utility bills under my name, use my ITIN to get my license, then come back to Texas.

Does this sound feasible? Has anyone done this before? Is there anything I need to know before I try this out? For how long will the NM license be valid? And what is the penalty for driving with a New Mexico DL in Texas?

Thank you and god bless

If possible register the car in New Mexico in your name once you get the NM Drivers License.

If you don't have your own car and you get pulled over in Texas you can always say you're on vacation and your relative let you borrow the car that should work.

I haven't heard about the process for New Mexico's DL, but I know that it's possible in WA, and someone mentioned to me that it's a lot easier too.
First of all I don't think you'd need a few months, just one month or three weeks up there would be enough to renew your DL.

I say do it as soon as possible!!, I mean even if you get pulled over in NM just tell them you're visiting having the peace of mind that your license still hasn't expired. Just make sure know the all requirements and that you have all your necessary paperwork with you (matricula, birth certificate) w/e they ask.
I encourage you go to visit their website and get informed before going.

I was in the same boat as you, I got informed, looked through the requirements and I was lucky enough to find someone to take me, (though I had to pay a hefty fee lol).
Just remember though, "Life without risks is no life at all"

agree with suggestion that you should go before your dl expires. i think it helps when you apply for license too and you won't look so suspicious. also, if you are driving, don't drive through el paso to get to new mexico cause they have a checkpoint. good luck!!
