LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - March 29, 2010) - After his narrow healthcare reform victory, President Obama is now going to have to start work on US immigration reform, the next item on his to-do list. With increasing drug-related violence close to the Mexican border, and twelve million illegal immigrants in the country, calls for action on US immigration reform are getting louder and louder.
On 21 March, up to 200,000 people joined the "March for America" in Washington DC, seeking to push immigration issues up the political agenda. In a video address to the rally, the President promised action on immigration but warned of a rough road ahead. Latino voters see immigration reform as the modern equivalent of Martin Luther King's Civil Rights movement fifty years ago. Hispanic church groups are threatening civil disobedience to press politicians to act on the issue this year.
A new national Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) poll released on 23rd March also showed significant popular support among Christian Americans for reform, with fifty-two per cent of respondents believing that the US immigration system is completely or mostly broken. Sixty per cent also believed that illegal immigrants should have an earned path to legal citizenship.
Attempts to find a bipartisan approach to the issue could well fail. Republicans are angered by Obama's healthcare reforms and are threatening to retaliate by withdrawing support for immigration reform. Senator Lyndsey Graham, a Republican Senator for South Carolina, warned that immigration reform was likely to be the "first casualty" if the healthcare reforms were passed. Graham had previously been working with Democratic Senator Charles Schumer on a bipartisan approach to the immigration issue. Their plans dealt with the concerns of both parties, including tougher border controls and internal enforcement, as well as a framework for temporary workers and an earned path to amnesty and legal citizenship for illegal immigrants.
Commenting, Liam Clifford of world-leading visa company Global Visas said, "US immigration reform is moving rapidly up the American political agenda and whatever the outcome, this is likely to have an impact on those seeking US visas in future."
