here is the firm I called

http://www.mayvisalaw.com/CM/Custom/Attorneys.asp

I just called to get a consultation appt. the guy asked first and last name, contact number, if i was us citizen, what visa i was looking for, if i had a visa, if my parents were residents, kids if had, what i was doing, undergrad or grad...just a lot of questions.. it felt uncomfortable

is this normal? i imagine it is, but just confirm it is safe to talk to these people?

anyone know of a reputable attorney/firm they have already used in NYC?

thanks!

It is always safe to talk to a real lawyer, they are bound by the code of law not to reveal anything you say.

@Gracie,They ask those questions to ascertain what you might be qualified for under the law,not necessarily to make you uncomfortable.

I've consulted with at least five lawyers and I'm still here! Haha.

Just be careful on who you hire. I would hire someone who had been recommended by others because a lot of times lawyers seem nice, but they end up just being money hungry a-holes. Make sure that you sign a contract and that it's clear on what the fees are going to be and that it specifies what the lawyer is responsible for. Also, get at least a second opinion.

Hope the consult goes well, Gracie!!

^^ true, so don't get uncomfortable with discussing him/her your status. As long as it's a REAL lawyer....and I say this because most of them are scammers (trust me, I've had encounters)....you should be okay.

Let us know how it went on the meeting =)
