Hi,

I have a cousin in Flint, Michigan who is a DREAM student and is still in high school. According to her, she is not able to graduate from high school because the state does not allow illegal immigrants to graduate. This sounded really odd to me because I was able to graduate from HS, but this was in Texas so state laws can be different in that regard. Thus, I would like to know if she is just being prevented from graduating high school due to anti-immigrant views within the school OR is it really legally not possible for her to graduate.

Thanks!!

According to this document (is dated '06) the law which says regardless of status an individual is allowed equal access to school.

It is very possible this is a reaction to Arizona law... because unless your cousin willingly provided the information that she was undocumented, the school didn't have the right to ask or treat her differently because of her status.

Ditto.

Contact your local ACLU about this... they may be able to help.

Yeah!! she was finally able to graduate from High School. After several meetings with school officials, the school finally let her graduate. Now, the problem is college, but we'll see what happens. WE NEED THE DREAM ACT NOW!!!!

I encourage your friend to check out the following thread on going to college and receiving financial aid from private institutions:
