San Diego, CA

Hi!
I'll be visiting Northern California in September and I'm interested in making a quick trip to San Diego (not sure if I'm driving , flying, or taking a bus). How is the situation there? Are there any checkpoints? It makes me nervous to be that close to the southern border (although I live pretty close to the northern border of the U.S.). I want to go to SeaWorld, not sure if that's close to Mexico, and of course I want to hit up some nice beaches...

I currently have a valid WA state license and I've used to it to travel to California with no problems before.

I'd love to get any info from those who are either from San Diego or have traveled there.

there are immigration check points along the I 5 and I 15 in san clemente, and temecula, respectively. also, if you take train, or bus, immigration officials board the bus or train and ask at random.

i'll be living in san diego next year and i was told by some of the members here that it's not safe because it's very close to the border. but anyway have a wonderful safe trip

Update.

There are no more immigration check points on I-5. I drove to San Diego a few weeks ago from Los Angeles and they have removed the checkpoint. They replaced that with a CHP weight scale and produce checkpoint off the side of the freeway.

That is completely wrong; the checkpoint is very much still open. The thing is that is isn't always active; it's opened at random times. When it is closed, you just see the weight scale and a myriad of border patrol cars parked alongside the road and at the checkpoint building itself. The same is true of the I-15 checkpoint. There are checkpoints in every direction when leaving the San Diego area: I-5 and I-15 to the North and on the I-8 to the East. I live in San Diego; I should know.
