It must be especially tough if you are a dreamer surrounded by negative family members, student peers, even your community.

The negativity can be overwhelming. The media doesn't help either.

I agree with Trovales, everything around you can just be so dark that you just end up hating everything.

I personally hate it when people tell me that I have it better off than some person in Africa like if I didn't know that. However, I wasn't born in Africa and I can only imagine how bad it is. I know that its bad there or anywhere else but thats not going to change the fact that I am undocumented. Why think like that ? Sorry if I sound like I only care about myself but someone has to and well its me only.

No, it's good to think that way. Although this sounds harsh, my Korean mother would always get angry at me if I compared to people below me, asking why I'd compare myself to "dog poop".

A: Why do I have to study? My friend doesn't study at all.
B: Why do you compare yourself to dog poop.

A: People in Africa have it worse than we do... so we shouldn't expect much.
B: Why do you compare yourself to dog poop.

Mother's harsh wisdom.. although they do have it difficult in Africa; still, it's a bad idea to become complacent by lowering ones' standards.. However, I think it's a usual thing for people to compare themselves to people below them when they want to feel better and to compare themselves with people above them when they wish to obtain something.

A: Why do I have to study? Jen never studies... (comparing with someone worser off to justify something..)

A: Why can't I have a car? Jen has a car... (comparing with soemone better off to justify something.. again..)

Email them. I'm going to do the same. They don't understand....they really don't.

Wouldn't this be the second suicide of a DREAM Act beneficiary publicized this year? I really hope this person doesn't do it.

Exactly, i am African (lived there for 15 years) and some of you guys are making it out like Africa is hell on earth. Some of you need to stop watching national geographic and stop making these stereotypical assumptions about Africa. It really pisses me off when ignorant people try to look down upon us.

truly sad. and this is from a person that likely gets instate tuition and lives in a big city where there is public transportation and plenty of off the books jobs. those in small towns in other states have it even harder.

Aww, this is really sad.
I hate that ignorant people against immigration don't get this. They all say "go home, get an education there."...when after 15 years (or however many it is for any of you), home doesn't seem very much like home anymore; it sometimes does get to the point where you don't feel anywhere is home really..

Other than that, she's not necessarily saying that being African is lowering one's standards. It's more of lowering one's standards by comparing oneself to someone who is disadvantaged in some manner. Honor is a quality that many Asian cultures consider to be really important in humans.
