I really hope this goes to the media. So they will start talking about this. Even if many wont like it, it will at least get people talking about the dilemma many of us are in.

Mother's harsh wisdom.. although they do have it difficult in Africa; still, it's a bad idea to become complacent by lowering ones' standards.. However, I think it's a usual thing for people to compare themselves to people below them when they want to feel better and to compare themselves with people above them when they wish to obtain something.

A: Why do I have to study? Jen never studies... (comparing with someone worser off to justify something..)

A: Why can't I have a car? Jen has a car... (comparing with soemone better off to justify something.. again..)
My mother says the same thing, but not so eloquently. So does my boss. I pointed out that Bill Gates would not be the richest man in the world (though this might now be outdated) had he been born in Haiti, but they believe that its just one's portion in life.

There is a reason why Africa is used in so many examples of malnourished children and underdeveloped countries-- because it is. It is the most underdeveloped continent in the world, mostly because of colonialism and the civil wars which have torn African countries apart. Some civil wars are ethnicity based and some are religion based, others are struggles for power over their resources. It is thought to be almost a curse to be rich in natural resources, as your country will be a bigger target for colonialists (back in the day) or greedy politicians. Although it might be unfair to stereotype all African countries in this way, I do think that this might have be derived from some generalization about the overall condition of the continent.
