A lot of people around here seem to think flying is pretty safe if you've got a valid passport, but I'm still weary. And I need a vacation. Feeling stuck is really getting me down. I wanna take a trip down to florida (from NY) but I don't know what'd be best.

Do they check greyhound busses? Amtrak? Do they check them only if they're going southboud? Any southern states in particular to avoid?

Thanks for the help!

Check craigslist for anyone driving down there, many offer rides if you chip in gas money. Take precautions though. I will hopefully be driving down to Miami next month. As far as buses or planes. From the horror stories shared here, I can deduce that buses are not that safe, but then, you're only making a trip down the eastern flank, so it should be no problem, I would imagine. I wouldn't recommend any if you don't have a gov't issued ID though, or a college ID at least. But that's just me.

Well, the Harvard student was arrested trying to board a plane. I've been on Amtrak (Portland to Chicago) where they've done a quick border patrol search. Greyhound is notoriously bad.

Right now, especially with the political situation as it is, and with all of the scrutiny about immigration, rideshares with friends or other carpools are probably safest. Craigslist is one option, but I'd also check out bulletin boards on college campuses nearby. I know some students who will post/pick up rides with other students, but don't want the safety and other risks that Craigslist might bring.

Much appreciated.

As far as your trip, I wouldn't recommend going to Florida because all 3 ways suck, and you have to go through a lot of unfriendly states when you travel by bus and train. A plane might be safer, but you will be flying fro and to a place known for large number of immigrants, which will probably increase the scrutiny you will be put under at both airports.

If you have a valid passport, consider airplane ! It's the safest mode of travel.

Ei Victor, but i've heard stories of TSA's tattle tale allowing those w/ valid passports(w/o visa stamp)to fly...but alerting the landing port on the other side that a suspected illegal is on board.Wouldn't that be risky?

First, I don't know about your tale.

Second, I've been flying zillion of times without any problem at all. What the TSA officer does at the gate is that they merely look at your passport to make sure the name on the boarding pass matches with the name on passport. Due to the nature of my business, I have to fly at least twice a month without any problems. Once in a while, I got weird look; but that's it. Try to stay cool.

Also, you might want to flip to the passport biographical page before you hand your passport to the TSA officer. Pick a busy time if you could; the busiest time is early morning 8am fight.

Just on the sidenote, the Harvard student got caught because he didn't have a valid passport. He tried to board a flight with his school ID.
