Took driver's test and did paperwork in Mexico w/an address from there. Same deal w/insurance.

PS: If you haven't figured it out, I had to go to Mexico.

Oh, you actually went to Mexico. I've heard that it's possible to acquire it without leaving the country though. I know it's probably not legal lol

I'm guessing someone could grease some palms down there in your behalf. I wasn't going to suggest it, but US cops have no way of knowing if your international license is a fake either, but acquiring valid insurance could prove tricky or down right impossible.

You guys driving w/an international license I'm guessing are driving in an international car as well??

Yea i cant go all the way out to WA anytime soon. So ill stick with this.
yes, if you put it that way. But in CA they still fine you the same as having without a license, and you might get towed too. i guess it's 50/50 chance.

Ok, I have one.

I had a DL from my home country which I got many years ago by passing the local driver's test.

After many years, when I needed to drive in the US, I got my sister back home to go have an International Driver's Permit issued on my behalf. All that is needed is a passport photo, the original DL and some fee.

Trouble is the International Driver's Permit is valid for only one year. So, its hassle having it renewed so often.

I ve used it to rent a car on multiple occasions.

I got stopped twice, once in NY, once in MD. I think both times I got off easy without a ticket, precisely because I had an international DL on a rental. Cops probably figured what's the use of giving him a ticket if he doesn't live here.

You re supposed to carry your passport with it, I never did, I was never asked for it.

Now, I am also interested in buying a car and I would like to hear how that would work. Because the little research that I did, if I remember correctly, says you can only be insured with it for a short term.

Could anyone with experience write about it?

My uncle got ticketed for driving an American car w/a Mexican license. I called Minnesota to sort it out (cuz he never paid it) and the ticket was expunged (no warrant or fee incurred). This may be common practice w/these kind of scenarios, who knows?

Yea i believe The rules for it are different in all states.
Cali i guess is strict about it as per the previous post i just read, I live on the east coast, and know people that have driven with it, even got pulled over, and were let off easy with warnings. One had a rental, and another had a family member's car with valid insurance and registration.
I dont know anyone thats been ticketed, so i wouldnt know.
I sent a passport picture over and had it processed, took a couple months and a fee. Im gonna buy an old beater car soon, so thats why i was asking. I havent gotten around asking about insurance or its possibilities with the IL yet, but we'll see.

I have driven on an Intl DL before. Got pulled over twice both for speeding (yea, I know..dumb move but I use to have a legit FL DL..and drove rough for first few years and habit stuck with me).
Well anyways, Once I got pulled over in my mom's bfs car- Valid registration and insurance under his name..Cop took and license and sat in the car for good 15 mins.. I am guessing to scare me and finally, let me go with a warning.

Second time, I got pulled over in Miami.. I was visiting a friend and was in a rental..so that one wasn't suspicious at all and he let me go super easy.

I am now extremely careful with the way I drive.. hope u r too if you have an intl license!
