I'm in California now.. and having a job within walking distance is a plus.. If I went back to South Florida to live with my family I most likely wouldn't find a job I'd like to have nearby..

Thanks for sharing what you know about living in Florida. Yes, South Florida definitely has an amazing night life but that is not the reason why I want to move. I'm not much of a party-girl... I just fell in love with the culture in Miami. I love meeting people from different cultures and it was so amazing to go out every day and always meet someone from a different country. I think my reason for wanting to move so bad is that I feel like I am ready to experience something new and because I don't have any kids and because I'm not married I feel like this is the perfect time in my life to make such a change. I may not ever get the opportunity to do something like this in the future. I also have a degree in Bilingual Education and although I can't put my degree to use in any state where I live, if I were to move to Miami and eventually legalize my status (whether it be through DREAM Act or I just happen to meet a hot Argentinian/Spanish/Italian man, fall in love and marry, lol, a girl can dream!) I would be in a place where I can put my degree to use.

And I I own a car... I don't have a license but I have been driving since I was 16. Here in TX, certain insurance companies will allow you to insure your vehicle even if you don't have a drivers license and even some small owned car dealerships will put the car title and everything in your name without having to provide a driver's license if you purchase a car from them. These are the type of things that I don't know how/or if I could find in South Florida... I don't know anyone down there which is why I decided to post my fears/concerns here.

But yeah... I have a lot of thinking to do. Thank you so much for giving me some good points to consider and think about. I really appreciate it!!

It seems to me that you feel your ovaries are drying up, so you have to run out and procreate. It's your hormones that are urging you to move more so than your rationale.

Oh well.

You won't be living a luxurious South Beach, clubbing-every-night lifestyle if that is what appealed to you so much in the first place. You can forget most late night affairs if you lack proper documentation (i.e., a driver's license). Getting a decent, non-project-like apartment will be a problem. Getting a valid Florida license or identification card is near impossible if you are illegal (they just recently added more stringent requirements over the already stringent ones). Having a car is a must! Public Transportation is horrendous.

In all, the life you live in Texas is one that most undocumented youth would die for. You risk throwing it all away for a largely unfounded whim of wanting to move to a nicer location. (You're not satisfied with the chocolate cake you're eating, and want double chocolate instead).

Truly, you risk losing everything you have, and gaining very little, if anything.

This was kind of a depressing post to read but I definitely need to hear all sides and opinions about this issue. Maybe Miami is not the ideal place to live but I'm sure there are other great places in South Florida where it might just work out. Next time I go to Florida (hopefully by the end of the year) I will be looking at other cities near Miami and see where would be a good place to live.

And no, I don't want to move to Miami for the party life. I rarely go out... not much of a party girl but I think the night life will be one of the perks of living in such a beautiful city. I am young after all and we only live once!! Why would it be difficult to enjoy the night life without a driver's license? I had no problem getting into any places when I was there using my Mexican passport.

But thank you for your honesty... your post made me realize that it won't all be great and amazing and awesome, which is what my heart is saying!

Ummm... ok... no need to get rude. If you don't have something productive to add to this discussing don't say anything at all. I am honestly trying to get some information that will help make me make a very important decision.

STAY IN TEXAS!!!

Here is why:
- you have a JOB, you might NOT find a job in South Florida
- You can get another degree and pay in-state tuition, in FL you CANT pay instate tuition
- Texas is very friendly toward undocumented aliens (Florida, i am not sure yet, especially if Rick Scott gets elected for governor, all the Floridian undocumented aliens might be screwed)
- I feel in FL you get a greater chance of getting caught than in texas

For now, i recommend staying in TX
I would love to have a job and receive in-state tuition

I agree with H3wlett on this. I've lived in FL for about 12 yrs and I love it, but Miami is just about the worst place in the state.

Miami doesn't feel like it's part of the US. It feels like you're in a third world country. That may sound bad, but whatever. Unless make a good living, you'll be living in a run down apartment in the ghetto.

Like Hewlett mentioned, Cubans are NOT nice or even respectful. They are sometimes worse than racist hillbillies. Both times I've been to the airport, I was treated like crap by Cubans. When they lost my bag, the girl at baggage claim gave me an attitude and treated me like it was my fault they lost my bag. I refuse to fly out of or into Miami ever again (even though Miami flights are cheap!).

There is NO way to get a driver's license in FL without legal status since they changed the law this year. Like H3wlett said, public transportation sucks. I think it's possible to get insurance with an international license, though. Not sure.

The unemployment rate is pretty high, so the odds of finding a job aren't so good. A lot of people I know are unemployed, legal or not. Just in my family, both my parents were laid off months ago, as were my uncle and aunt.

If you want to live in FL, I say move to Orlando or West Palm. They are much nicer and cleaner.. Not to mention there are less Cubans.

You have a job and an overall good life. If I were you, I'd stay in Texas. So many people on the forum would give anything to switch places with you. Don't just throw it all away because you're.. bored.

I'd say wait it out till your status changes. You have a job!! And the cops are all over south florida, don't risk getting caught undocumented while driving.

Once legal, then try out South Florida. It's nice.

You would be foolish to move especially because you already have a nice life set!!
Just because you love the culture or whatever is NOT a good enough reason to move. You must remember...you aren't an American Citizen white girl in her early 20s free to do whatever she pleases. Given our situation, it is a risk not even worth considering.

Florida ... Texas??? Crazy!!! Move to southern Cali. It's expensive, but it's one of the best places to live in the country and lots of bilingual opportunities here too! Research it!
