Last night, the Senate, by unanimous consent, passed a bill approving $600 million in emergency funding to increase security along the U.S.-Mexico border. After passing the bill, Democrats hinted they hope to see more cooperation with other reform efforts.

“I’m for comprehensive immigration reform,” Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who introduced the bill, said yesterday. “But we’ve always said we should do border security first. This is border security first.”

Republicans have repeatedly said they will not support comprehensive immigration reform measures until the border is secured. But don’t count on dramatic change from the border’s bill passage: advocates for immigrants rights and for tougher enforcement said they do not expect the debate on immigration to change significantly.

The Dems could pass a bill to build a border fence 100ft tall fence surrounded by a moat filled with laser-shooting alligators and sharks with missile launcher towers every 10 feet and the border would never be secure enough for the GOP. The GOP as a whole will never vote for CIR unless every single illegal is deported, so lets not be too overly optimistic that this action will placate the xenophobic members of the GOP.

This is exactly the problem with the GOP. They complain day and night about the border not being secure, but have any of them clarified exactly what that entails?

I wish I could call them out on it.

Nothing, it will have done nothing at the end of the day. Those who are not for some kind of immigration reform at this point will never be, even with border security measures. Perhaps it could have been use for some under the table deal, but I highly doubt Dems are working on this. They just think they will have the upper hand when it comes to negotiating immigration reform. The problem is we have only seen border security bills or border patrol increases since the Bush administration and we're no where close to coming an agreement on getting anything done.
