Well you can get a new passport from your embassy, an empty one once the old one expires. Obviously the new one is not going to have any visas in it, so you can just run with that excuse if you were to fly. Is it a good idea though? Well, weigh the pros and cons and then decide if the risk is worth taking.

also would an expired government ID be a good alternative to show just in case they wanted more identification ??

Don't even attempt to show an expired government ID ! It worked in the past, but just not now! Try to get a passport asap. If you show the TSA officers a passport, they wouldn't ask you for further identification.
