I just hopped off a conference call with some retired military leaders who explained specifically why the DREAM Act fits into a defense authorization bill. As you may know, the DREAM Act would allow undocumented students who came to America under the age of 16 to apply for a path to citizenship if they complete college or enlist in the military. The vast majority of these students had no decision in coming to America; it was the decision of their parents. They are currently raised on American streets and educated in American schools. Yet because of the rules of the military, said Retired Lt. Colonel and former West Point professor Margaret Stock, these students cannot voluntarily enlist, een though they would be subject to the draft. After a vetting process, these students would be accepted for enlistment with conditional green cards. “This would be a tremendous benefit to the armed forces,” Stock said.

The Department of Defense’s Strategic Plan for fiscal years 2010-2012 recommends passage of the DREAM Act, in fact.

Strategic Goal 2 – Shape and maintain a mission-ready All Volunteer Force.

Recruit the All-Volunteer Force by finding smart ways to sustain quality assurance even as we expand markets to fill manning at controlled costs as demonstrated by achieving quarterly recruiting quality and quantity goals, and through expansion of the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) program and the once-medically restricted populations, as well as the DREAM initiative.

The President has promised to talk to Senators and lend the weight of the office to passing the DREAM Act inside the defense authorization bill. It will be a tall order. The DREAM Act itself, as an amendment to the package, will most likely need 60 votes, and though multiple Republicans have supported the common-sense measure in the past, many are now balking. Even if it gets in the bill, there are filibuster threats on the whole package, because of the addition of a legislative repeal of the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.

So it’s a long road. But it’s a fight worth making for students who should not be punished for something their parents decided many years ago, who are dedicated to contribute to their adopted country.

The only difference between Mccain and her, is that I want to bang that chunky chick. Other than that, shes just the same as her dad, or did everyone forget that Mcunt was asked the same question and answered the same way as her daughter, and everyone clapped like idiots... Why doesn't anyone say.. "What will you be doing to help us get this bill pass?" I mean come on, I have friends that support this shit but they never do anything, they just get high and go to work.
