Quote:
Republicans appear united against the measure, including some GOP senators who favor lifting the Pentagon's requirement that gays and lesbians keep their sexuality a secret. The Republican opponents are upset that Democratic leaders so far refuse to allow GOP amendments to the broader National Defense Authorization Act that includes the "don't ask, don't tell" provision.

Without the support of the Maine senators, Democrats are unlikely to muster the 60 votes needed to proceed with debate on the defense authorization plan. Both oppose the policy, and Collins was the sole Republican vote in the Senate Armed Services Committee in support of getting rid of it.

But in a statement issued Monday night, Collins said she would side with the rest of the GOP because the Democratic leadership of the Senate "intends to shut Republicans out of the debate."
If Republicans filibuster the Defense bill tomorrow, there'll not be any discussion of Dream Act

Can someone who fully knows what to look out for today please clear this ambiguity? What are the key votes tomorrow and what should we look out for?

No. It goes like this.
Reid or Levin will ask for unanimous consent to proceed to the bill, a republican senator will object and mccain or somebody else will filibuster. Then to defeat this filibuster..
First - Vote to overcome cloture (kill the filibuster) and to start debate on the whole defense bill itself. 60 needed if a republican senator starts filibustering or 51 needed if they don't filibuster (yea right)
Second - If cloture is defeated, amendments will be offered. First amendment brought up could be the DREAM Act. 60 needed if a republican senator starts filibustering or 51 needed if they don't filibuster (doubt it)
Second (version 2) - If the democrats can't get 60 votes, then it's dead or they could make a republican senator actually filibuster (make somebody talk and talk forever [literally, they can't even leave for a break or to go to the bathroom]. But they might bring it up again later (probably after elections).
Third - republicans will bring up amend to strike (get rid of ) the DADT language in the defense bill. 60 needed.
and there will be more votes depending on how many additional amendments are offered and there will be one vote to overcome cloture on the entire bill 60 needed again. and last vote to pass the bill 51 needed. But what's for sure is that the final final vote will not take place tomorrow. Probably not this week at all.

How do I know? I am double majoring in economics and political science and I watch 4 hrs of news (msnbc) every weekday and I've watched cspan1 and 2 many times before so I am familiar with the house and senate procedures.

Nobody knows what exact time which votes will take place because of all the bs speeches the republicans will give bitching about how this is all a political stunt by Reid and talking shit about the DREAM Act and all the quorum calls (telling senators to come to the floor for a vote or etc. this takes a long time but they play a little classical music for you though so you don't get bored lol). But first vote (cloture vote) is scheduled at 2:15 ET. So tune into C-span2 tomorrow at 2 and you just have to keep watching (takes hours) as boring Cspan can be. you can watch cspan online. just go to google and search cspan. remember to go to cspan2. cspan1 is house and cspan2 is senate.

Cloture vote to even OPEN the debate on the Defense Bill. This will be the first vote.

We're not sure in what order amendments will come up (DREAM, DADT), but DREAM is expected to come up very shortly after if cloture is passed and debate starts.

Then a vote on DREAM itself will be come up to add the amendment to the bill. If passed, it is attached.

The rest of the debate goes on, amendments are added/modified. A final vote for the full bill will be needed. Then the bill will go into conference with the House and so on until it hopefully reaches Obama's desk and he signs it.

DA User.. Honestly, I don't know.. All I know is that we will be extremly lucky if we do manage to get 62 yay votes easily as you say.. lol but really. At this point, only God knows. Pray, that's all you can do right now and leave the rest up to God. But a lot of things will have to go right in our favor for Dream to pass tomorrow though like that no more democrat senators stab us in the back like ben nelson and hope that some republicans (at least 2-3, more is better) will have a compassionate heart and some conscience. I'm not going to give out my prediction and a % of passing. I don't wanna jinx it. If you have some time tonight or maybe really early tomorrow morning, send out last minute emails or call the offices of LeMieux-R, Hagan-D, Ben Nelson - D, Pryor-D, Snowe-R, Collins-R, Voinovich-R, Gregg - R, and Brown - R
