Depends on the case. Every case is different.

There's a pattern in these deportations. In fact, I believe the student in the article seek asylum, but was denied. Thus, there's a deportation order against him.

Let's all hope that Dream Act will pass after the November election !

he had completed 2 years of community college and was planning on transfering, with that in mind I would guess he was maybe 20-21 years old. The warrant against him and his family was from 11 years ago, the guy was a minor with a warrant that neither he or his family knew existed.

What sucks about this whole situation is that there are laws protecting the incompetence of lawyers that fuck up and get people deported because of their fuck ups.

Illegal Thai, the guy was not a criminal under normal circumstances, he only did what he had to do to survive, the flawed immigration system just ensured that doing that was considered illegal, but he did not steal, murder or rape anyone, there was no mention of drugs, and someone with status would not be considered a criminal for doing the same thing he did.

Actually, this got me thinking....is there any way to find out if you have a deportation order issued against you?

My father had a petition pending through a job at one point, but it all fell apart and I was wondering if there is a chance that it could have went far enough that if it was denied a deportation order would be issued.

I would ask my father, but that man is too fucking incompetent to give me a straight answer.

and don't any of you dare to say that who ever comes here legally is somehow a nice dandy little lad, NOT KNOWING HOW IT FEELS TO NOT HAVE SOMETHING; MAKES SOMEONE TAKE IT FOR GRANTED AND ABUSE IT...
I see this pattern of public burden on the U.S. system everyday from LEGAL permanent residents. They know how to work the sytem; apply for every possible benefit under the sun (whether needed or not), and then pretend that THEY are deserving of it because they have status. And I do agree with Alex that the system is totally screwed where you can be "sponsored" to come into this country and sit on your ass for the rest of your life and be unproductive; and all the while, the U.S government will be ok with it. LPR and certainly citizen status should be conditional on productivity and good civics, not just on carrying the green card around. The problem with that kid was that he had been a fugitive for so long - from what I've read, long-time fugitives along with gang-members, absconders, and criminals are the priority. And if you have pending proceedings, you are obligated to inform the government of your whereabouts at all times. I don't think he or his family knew this, but if they had, they would have received correspondance from DHS regarding their deportation. I believe is called a "baggage-letter". It is very difficult to know about all these rules when you aren't permitted to keep track of your case without representation. Just like you can log on to USCIS's website to keep track of your petition if you're applying for adjustment of status; you should be able-under strict confidentiality and secure means- to find out your status with DHS. It's only fair to have the right to know about your case without mandating involvement of a third party, if you cannot afford an attorney, much less an INCOMPETENT one. Or in the student's case, NEGLIGENT.

By they way "Illegal Thai" - your user name says it all- stop trolling this site. You are obviously not a qualifiying DREAM act person or student, and you are certainly not an undocumented immigrant. I highly doubt that any "illegal" immigrant would use that adjective as part of their user name. And if I'm right...you need to attend school asap. Your syntax is an embarrassment to your fellow citizens.

but yeah. fuck, the guy was here since he was a month and a half old, its just not right.
It sucks but they do that. If you have a warrant out they are starting to aggressively go after people like the officer did with this kid. They follow you or knock on your door and make their way in it's rough.
