I just thought it would be a good idea to create an on-line pre-med society for us. Or does it already exist? To share volunteer, clinical shadow, or research assistant experience.. to be more specific, I would like to know where I can get those experiences.. Of course it will be very different for those with ssn and without ssn. I personally don't have one..

I've been thinking of going premed... it takes so long though ...but for some reason medicine keeps calling out to me...but I keep getting discouraged.. I mean I'm smart, my average GPA was 3.7 in high school(freshman and sophomore year I was not serious at all, I didn't even know about GPA until later), my highest GPA was 4.5 but they told me only the best of the best, like valedictorians, would be good for premed

Medicine is a broad field.. I think we should all help each other since our requirements are not that different. Dental, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistance and etc., we all need some level of clinical shadowing experience, volunteering hours, and stuffs like that... I just wanna share information on where you can get those experiences without having to go through strict paper works... you know what I mean =)

I'm out of school now, but I was pre-med. I was able to have volunteer, shadowing, and research assistant experiences. If you want specific information on undocumented friendly places, it helps to know what city you are in.

Absolutely true. I am from NYC. I go to CUNY school.

I wanted to enroll in summer research program(specifically at Rockefellar university) but I could not get into the program and get the study grant so I e-mailed professors at SUNY and got to work at a lab on my own last summer. It was really hard to pass the administrative stuffs at first but eventually everyone decided to ignore my status or my presence at all.. it took me 1/3 summer to do that..

Volunteer-wise.. I once went to Center for Children in NYC where my friends' mother worked. They wanted a background check which I didn't know about. I freaked out and just got out of there asap.. People there were like 'its no big deal, even if you had a history of something its okay we will accept you. why are you so freaked out about it?'

Breast Cancer society in Manhattan, around Madison square garden (called "Hopelodge" )did not ask me to fill out a form that involves putting down SSN but the works you do there are mostly a preparation for the parade or their meetings.. Its still good though.

I really want a volunteer job, shadowing experiences and etc... all the normal activities I should be doing.. I am really behind of everything because of my status. I feel like I am about to give it up because its just too unrealistic for me.. is it??

How the hell do you major in pre-med other than taking the pre-med course layout? There's no such thing as a pre-med major...

I am premed and have applied to med schools this year. I was able to get a volunteer opportunity at an urban hospital. I was asked for an ss# and after being turned down at many other places, I resorted to using my identification number that my cuny college had provided me. I ended up working there for a year. Now I am crossing my fingers and hoping that I'll get in this cycle. And to reiterate what's been said earlier, there is no such thing as a premed major, you take the following classes: 1 year general chem w/ lab, 1 year organic chem w/lab, 1 year physics w/ lab, 1 year biology w/ lab, 1 year calculus(not necessary, might be requirement for some schools), and 1 year english. You can major in philosophy and still be premed. Good luck to those who choose this path, for people like us this career path is the hardest of all. BTW I am in nyc.
