fly or drive to south texas for visit (brownsville)???

hey guys , so i have searched this forums back and forth and i need help from people in south texas most likely ,
im planning on going to visit my gf to brownsville tx right in the border (yeah i know... should've find another gf... lol) anyways my DL is expired over a year and my foreing passport is VALID sooo, if i fly there i cant use my dl but i can use my passport if we go by car there on the way back to austin tx (my gf us citizen driving) if they ask me u.s citizen i can say "yes" and be happy ever after, if they ask something else like id please them im sooo can please someone tell me if they have dealed with this situation before , ?? is ICE hardcore in brownsville, mcallen harlingen airports? anyone has flying out of those with foreing passports with no problems before?? thanks guys i really apreciate it!

Considering how it's a border town, it seems like a really bad idea to go within oh... 100 miles of that place.
