The so-called cloture vote would not be on the bill itself, but on whether to move toward a debate and then vote on the bill. Also on the schedule for a cloture vote is the bill that would repeal the ban on gays serving openly in the military.

We know, but if we don't get 60 votes it dies.

Yes, which is why we need 60 votes, the final vote is no problem (only 51 votes nearly) the cloture vote is a different story (60 votes)

The cloture to end debate (filibuster) is 60. IF we have 60 votes for closing debate then we basically got the Dream Act passed.

Continue to call, fax, e-mail, and pray for the Dream Act.

I honestly don't get the point of cloture. How many people will vote to continue on with a bill if they don't later to plan to vote on it?

Well I guess it could happen if it's a very big bill that they want to tack amendments on to later.

Yeah but if cloture is obtained, won't the senate proceed to vote on the bill itself?

Yeah, pretty much.

I'm hoping a few republicans vote yes on the cloture even though they're not later planning to vote yes on the actual bill. I believe that there are plenty of GOP senators out there who would vote yes to cloture because the understand the bill is a good thing (ie: McCain) but don't want to risk voting yes on the actual bill itself.

In the senate cloture is the vote on the bill itself. Once you achieve it you only need 51 (or 50 + vice president) votes (compared to 60 for cloture), so the up or down is just a formality.

After cloture we need just 50+ right? We don't need 60 again to end cloture? I'm pretty sure we just need 50+.

well the vote last week got us 59..so we could possibly push 60. So close I can almost taste it.

Sucks that just a hand full of people have all of our lives on hold.
