Man I've heard that having your car registered to another relative of yours is safer (when pulled over) if you have an International Driver's License. can somebody confirm this?

Yup, it is common sense to register it to another person. As an IDL holder, police expects you not to own anything presuming you are only in the country for a number of months. CAPISH?

Buying a car and insurance with IDL isn't a problem. The amount for insurance with IDL may however be double than what you'd pay with a state- issued driver licence and oftenely you'll be asked to pay for 6 months ahead. Such is insurance with Progressive, for example, that offers insurance for IDL holders.
A tad more difficult is to register it presenting your IDL as an ID, but if you accompany IDL with the driver licence from your country of origin, some offices will give you a pass.
The most difficult thing about driving with IDL however is when you get stopped by police for traffic infraction. Depending on the level of zealoutry of the officer that stopped you, you either may end up with a criminal traffic ticket that will require your court presence but you may drive off home and keep your car or in jail for driving without a licence with your car impounded.
Registering your car under somebody else's name cannot save you from consequences of driving with IDL which for the law enforcement officers amounts to driving without licence. Some counties in Michigan and New Jersey seem okay with IDL's, but that may have changed already.
My advice would be to use local public transit, taxi or rides from coleagues/relatives. You WILL eventually be stopped, a typical day of a cop on a patrol largely consists of running licence plates of surrounding vehicles through DMV databases and your plates WILL make them take notice.

I really appreciate your concern but whats life without risk? To me if you get deported you get deported but that shouldn't stop you from doing what you enjoy.

I'm done hoping for another failed Dream Act, it might not even happen. Not all Dreamers are willing to take chances I understand that, but I do. You'd never be 20 again in your lifetime so if you waste it doing nothing then I don't know. I'll try to live life as "legal" as possible with no regrets.

Again I thank you for your concern and I'll keep your warnings in my head all the time.

Good luck and sorry if I made you think I am in some way hostile, of course go ahead and do what you enjoy but read those warnings as a head-up to what's in front of you once you get pulled over.

I've a brazilian friend who got pulled over holding IDL and his valid foreign license for a minor traffic violation here in CA. The officer just gave him a warning. I think it just really depends on the officer's mood & judgement.
