In a Jan. 4 column, "Maine should lead on progressive immigration reform," Ralph Carmona, vice chair of the Portland Democratic City Committee, made some false statements concerning the DREAM Act.

Before reaching her decision to vote against a motion to consider this legislation with very little time left in the last congressional session, Sen. Susan Collins talked with many proponents of the bill, including Maine's Roman Catholic and Episcopal bishops, as well as other advocates.

She agrees that our current immigration laws are in need of major reform. The DREAM Act is an attempt to recognize the difficult status of individuals whose parents brought them into this country illegally through no decision of their own. But there were many controversial aspects of this particular bill, such as the cut-off age for its application and the fact that an individual could be convicted of three misdemeanors and still qualify, that deserved a full debate.

Sen. Collins is hopeful Senate leaders will allow for a thorough debate in the upcoming session of Congress.

What a coward.....we saw with health care dance how she pulled her suport at last min. She is not trust worthy. Graham is better then her and his atleast more powerfull and well respected in republicans compare to collins. Its worth it to work with graham then collins. Yes i know graham is not diffrent but his better choice then her. If you can get graham to suport CIR, you'll get Mccain, lugar, murkowski, brown, and many other moderates will come around automatically. Not to forget buy one get one free (Collins & Snow) will join them too. So the only way I see CIR passing in next two yr is with support of Graham and Mccain. Some time you just have to work with people that you never wanted to. I dont see any other way of passing CIR without Graham and Mccain. We all know Mccain and Graham are top two republicans woes also well respected with house republicans. They can make alot more diffrent pressure on house republicans to support CIR then president Obama.

lol what a backstabber. there will always be some stupid reason to vote 'no.' besides, congress can always take out certain provisions later and make the bill tighter in committee after it passes both chambers. she thinks we're stupid
