I just filed my taxes through a new tax preparer ( my other one retired ) and she told me that I am getting $950 in tax refund (my first time). Is it safe to claim this money? I have never ever claimed anything from the government, I don't desperately need it but an extra 950 bucks certainly won't hurt. So should I ask my tax rep to redo it or just send it in its current form?

PS: I filed with an iTIN.

Thanks in advance.

Since I got a full time job 2 years ago (not a good one) I've owed nearly $450 twice. I'd like a refund or at least to owe nothing.

Its safe. Its your own money, you just overpaid taxes. My parents got a refund last year and everything was fine.

Are you self employed?
If not, is your employer holding taxes for you?
If your employer is withholding taxes this just means that your employer paid the irs your taxes and the amount exceeded what you really owed in taxes.

ITINs were pretty much created for people who could not qualify for social security numbers. It would defeat the purpose if it wasn't safe.
PS: College people, don't forget to include your 1098-T forms from school when filing taxes to get a higher refund.

You can claim part of your tuition and school expenses if you file your 1098-T even if you did not work:
http://www.collegeloanconsultant.com...ax-credit.html

If your parents still claim you as a dependent, then you will have to go to them, if you are not claimed, you can file it yourself. When filing for the College Tax Credit, you just need the 1098-T from your school, and file all the expenses for the academic year, regardless of your status or if you worked or not.

If you decide to file for the college tax credit, don't worry, you won't pay anything to the government, you will get a refund of what you spent (tuition, computer, books, software, etc).

Any other questions, just get in contact with me. Again, anyone who is a college student can file for the College Tax Credit regardless of their status.

Does somebody know what actually constitutes income according to the tax code and the immigration code?

For example, I cannot work for someone with my ITIN, but could I let's say sell something with profit? Would that be considered income, and if so, is it still illegal in the US if someone is undocumented?
