You can't pass something people are against, even his healthcare bill was in danger of not passing last year WITH the super majority. For those complaining about why he is speaking, he needs to convince the people first in order to proceed with action.

He should have started convincing people 2 years ago. If you seriously don't believe Obama is doing all this just for his re-election then i don't know what to say to you. Then only way he can get republicans to act is to force them by signing an executive order for deffered action for dreamers. He needs to grow a stronger spine on this issue IMO.

Quote:
The President needs to take a detour. Heading into 2012, he can’t allow his legacy on immigration to be defined by a record number of deportations and no relief for any of the undocumented immigrants he pledged to legalize. It’s great that the President is using his megaphone to put more pressure on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. We need it. But we also need the Administration to take bold action to reform its enforcement policies and bring them more in line with their stated priorities.
In addition to the meeting that the President had with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on immigration, two senior administration officials, Melody Barnes and Cecilia Muñoz, conducted an on-the-record question and answer session with reporters. That provided an illuminating insight into the administration’s thinking on immigration: they’re worried about avoiding conflict.
Quote:
But senior administration officials said they did not want to make wider use of those powers for fear of deepening the conflict with Mr. Smith and other Republicans, who might try to limit the authority granted by immigration law and further stiffen their opposition to measures like the Dream Act. The officials spoke anonymously, saying they could discuss policy more freely that way.

BTW, didn't Obama give a "major" immigration speech in 2009 or 2010? See what good came out of that.

If he talked to republicans he would get a major NO to the face. Trust me, republicans are so attached to the tea party right now that they are willing to break ties with the rest of the country and put the us in danger of defaulting on the debt.

Do you seriously think you can negotiate with them? The only way to get congress to do something is if there is a major shift in ideology, and thats what the president is attempting. I don't blame him for wanting a 2012 re election, everyone, even him have personal interests for political, or personal reasons.

You have no idea what an executive order on the issue of immigration would do. I agree that he needs to grow a stronger spine, and thats what he is doing. The President has the power to influence laws by talking to the people who elect the lawmakers. Texas is a big "R" in the country, if he can shift it with the hispanic vote, he would be able to do so much more.

Giving a recycled speech can hardly be considered as growing a spine.

Quote:
The president will have to present a plan that takes amnesty off the table and focuses, instead, on making a real commitment to border and interior security," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said Tuesday morning. "If the president does these two things, he will find strong bipartisan support. If he doesn't, he won't."

This speech was useless IMO, he had a super-majority in the house and senate at one point and he failed to use it.

At the same time, however, the president has also signaled a shift in federal priorities.
"The (recent) increase in deportations has been a source of controversy," he acknowledged. "But I want to emphasize: We are not doing this haphazardly. We are focusing our limited resources on violent offenders and people convicted of crimes -- not families, not folks who are just looking to scrape together an income."
We all know that's a lie too.

I do not feel any positive feedback from the Obama speech other than we are not that stupid Sir. This is the same speech on a different date and talk is cheap. Now let us see what your actions are before you need our vote at the next elections. Just because we are vulnerable does not been we are stupid. You are deporting more Immigrants than ever and your imprisoning more immigrants than ever in this countries history but then tell us again you are supporting a immigration reform. BS

BS to all of the above - and proof there is in the continued number of people who keep receiving deportation orders. He is misleading people to confuse deportation with removal. Maybe ICE isn't knocking on these people's doors tonight and hauling away; but, they are still receiving deportation orders. Stop lying.

Meanwhile there is this whole thing with Chipotle and ICE, people scraping together an income let go with barely any warning, free to go around and be forced to take a job that will be more off the books than chipotle, potentially suffer indignities quietly, and most certainly less likely to pay taxes on both sides, the employer and the employed.

Then there are the cases of people in current petition processes that are covered under 245i, this whole prerna lal fiasco, it should never happen, apparently her issue was that she was supposed to leave this country 3 days before she even arrived, seriously, how in the world does that even happen?

Or the countless dreamers that we are having to fight for; who would have been deported because they had a busted tail light, or because they were caught taking greyhound or amtrak after finishing their college education, who were valevictorian and allowed to stay to give their speeches but than immediately deported, because those are the biggest vile scum of this country, they are worse than those that prey on children, at least that must be what obama meant when he said that they are only targeting those convicted of violent crimes. All this angers me, it angers me because despite all that bs, he is still the only realistic hope that we have and instead of using his power to actually prevent all the stuff from happening he rather mislead the public into thinking its not happening.

The only way that a realistic discussion on the DREAM Act will take place is if he uses his executive power to prevent the deportation of those that would be covered by the DREAM Act, than something would have to happen to address the dreamers, discussions from both sides that would have to be logical, rather than one side avoid participation and cry that they will not vote for this because they did not participate.
