anybody have the scoop on the latest - i think they now have you comeback for an interview to proof you are indeed a residence of WA - anyone going through the process ?

I just went through the process. In fact, I got my Washington DL in the mail yesterday.

Here's the process I went through vs the new process:

Old process: Get an appointment, show proof of residency, get a sheet of paper that says you can legally drive but your pending verification of your address. It's usually valid for two months. Then in the mail you get a letter with some information that you have to fax in and sign by a certain date from a WA fax number. Then they'll call you and set up an "interview" where you bring TWO valid proofs of residency. If you miss your appointment, the cancel your license then and there and you have to start the entire process over. They verify your residency then and there and then send your license in the mail. If you don't have enough proof of residency, they'll request you to bring more proofs and if you're papers proofs of residency are fake, you can be arrested for fraud. If everything goes ok (which it should if you have two proofs of residency that are legit) they mail you your license within 7-10 days. They tell you before you leave the little room. The good thing about this, although all the trips are a royal pain in the ass, your license is pretty much totally safe from being cancelled due to insufficient proof of residency because they make sure to prove your residency before issuing it. If you remember a couple months (or maybe a year or two ago) back, they went on a license canceling spree but with this new process, if you get your license, you're safe.

The New Process: (keep in mind i didn't go through it - someone i know is) You set up an appointment before your actual appointment. You come in, take your picture, establish your identity. Bring your proofs of residency. Then they'll call you and set up an appointment for your road test. When you pass it, you get the sheet of paper again. They mail you the forms that you have to fax in from a WA fax number and then they'll call you for your final step. Bring in both proofs of residency and they'll verify your residency and then mail it to you in 7-10 days, if everything goes okay. Again, if you fake proof of residency, you can be arrested for fraud. And if you miss your appointment, they cancel your license on the spot and you have to start the entire process over. But again, if you get through the entire process and they issue you your license, you're pretty much safe from cancelation due to the fact that they extensively made sure that you are a WA resident.

The new system is designed so that you have to make multiple trips to the DOL which is hard to do if you're from another state. So it's their way of really controlling what's happening.

well it's easy this is what you do... ********..... i dont think i can share such information over the forum, but my friend has done it. just try not to get any tickets, eventually they are going to say that you've been outof washington for some time, and that you need to get you own State's liscence

With all that work, might as well try and find some work in WA. I thought about trying this last summer but I'm less than 2 years from getting my degree in CT so I don't think there is merit in taking the risk.

I actually applied for my WA ID today, showed them my consular card, foreign passport, and proof of residence, which was a wells faro statement, they took a pic, and gave me a WA state dept, " qualifying for a WA drivers license, photo, etc,,,, application to obtain a WA Drivers License , so now they mail some paper in two weeks, I mail them back, and then they will call me to set up an appointment, do you know how extensive they 'proof your documents' because on this paper they say quote/unquote, at the appointment you will sign a supplemental application form, signing authorizes us to validate your WA residence address documents by contacting the organization that issued them, did you go through this ?

Can anyone provide some light as to how extensive the DMV proofs your documents ?

Can you check with your friend about how they verify your address, I'll have my bank statement in hand and perhaps a utility bill, when they call you must you go back to the same office where you applied or can you go to a different one ? I am going through it now,,, thanks...!

Does anybody know how long the "new" process takes?
