The DREAM Act, to those in Congress who are voting on whether to pass it or not, is an issue far removed from their personal lives. I for one am not in the United States illegally and was fortunate enough to pursue a higher education being able to count on government financial assistance. However, I have several peers who have been forced to pay out of state tuition, marry someone for papers, go to school in other countries, or choose to not go to college all because of the inaccessibility of resources that would aid them in achieving such a task. Enrolled in the rigorous International Baccalaureate program with these individuals, they proved to be extremely intelligent and deserving of a higher education. All received their IB diplomas and graduated top of their class. These individuals speak English fluently and know America as their only home. They talk, eat, dress, and act as Americans but are quickly reminded that they are not, when they are unable to apply to Ivy League schools or any college, which they can easily be accepted into but wouldn’t be able to afford. These students do not plan on living anywhere else but the United States for the rest of their lives because this is where they’ve been raised and where they call home. Unfortunately, this inability and obstacles they face in pursuing a higher education is detrimental to this country as they are unable to make contributions that would benefit us all. Society as a whole needs to consider cases like these and realize that we may be stopping immigrants from gaining legality if we deny the DREAM Act but at the same time we are letting some of the brightest minds be trumped by our fear and ignorance. Passing the DREAM Act would enrich this country’s education, by providing diversity in colleges and yielding innovative and useful ideas. We need to stop fearing immigration and start accepting these students because they have earned and deserve the right to go to college just as much as any American, with the same privileges. We are doing a disservice not only to these bright minds but to America by not passing the DREAM Act.
