Broken Arrow is 100% correct. If you want to take a chance on being one of the .00001% that sneak through the cracks go ahead. It would be prudent to pack up all of your stuff before you go to the recruiting office though. It will be one less thing you have to do when you're deported.

You have a better chance of the DA passing tomorrow than you do of surviving a military career without being caught.

I thank you for the advice, but for some undocumented like myself who do not have the luxury of living in immigrant friendly parts of the country (like California) or do not have false documents, the prospect of a non-combat Officer position in the army with the ultimate benefit of citizenship seems appealing.

Trust me. I would otherwise embrace the label of conscientious objector, but I am reduced to exploring such hideous options as military service.

Of course, good sir. But how does that explain the "success" of so many undocumented immigrants who have enrolled in the military, or the "unknown" citizenship status of so many more currently enrolled military personnel.

And, as I explained in my first post, there are 2 major definitions of Resident Alien used by 2 government agencies in this country. Granted, it would seem logical that the one you reiterated holds true for cases involving USCIS, but I have not found a source that explicitly states this is the definition employed by the various branches of our military.

And once more, I must cite not only the word of so many Republican Senators who claim undocumented youth can already join the military, but also the circumstantial evidence of once-undocumented personnel who have gone on to achieve citizenship through the military.

I came across this comment couple months back

""as an armed force member I like to clarify the U.S. Military is not a source of obtain your residence with in the U.S. if you are not at the very least a green card holder YOU CANNOT JOIN THE MILITARY!!! unless you speak arabic, or some rare language, and provided that the person reads, writes & speaks English as well and also is physically, mentally and morally qualified. Please take out your minds that the military is the last resource to save your lifes. The military is something YOU MUST QUALIFY FOR!!! because the benefits that they give to a service member are too much of a benefitial to them and their families like to just be hand out to anyone and everyone!!! ""

So I think there are still few ways to get in the army if you learn one of those rare languages

I am not sure how the undocumented got in the military or someone with a valid Visa.

"In order to join the US Military, you must either be a US citizen, or you must be a legal permanent immigrant, physically living in the United States, with a green card. The US military cannot and will not assist with the immigration process. If you are not a US citizen, you must legally and permanently immigrate to the United States first, via the regular immigration procedures and quotas, establish a residence, and then (if you meet the other qualifying criteria), visit a military recruiter's office and apply for enlistment."

That comes from this website:

http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joini...enlcitizen.htm

Not that I consider about.com the be all end all source for information it's common knowledge that the undocumented cannot legally enlist in the US military and non-citizens cannot serve as officers.

Where the comment you posted came from is beyond me, but it reads like a Nigerian scam email, which makes me question it's value as a source. I have lurked on this forum quite a while and from what I've seen a lot of folks on here prefer to read into something instead of read it.

The only way that an undocumented individual could enter the military would be through the discretionary power that is given to SoD to waive the citizenship requirements. which has never been done.

I went into an ARMY recruiting station once to ask if I there was any way I could join without papers, the recruiter asked if I knew Arabic or any other middle eastern language. I said no, so he then told me no. So by him asking that it leads me to believe that Illegals CAN join the military.

Did you tell the recruiter flat out that you were an undocumented immigrant or did you just tell him you didn't have a GC? There was a time and it possibly still is legal for temporary visa holders to legally get into the service based on language proficiency. Temporary visa holders and undocumented are two different things.

I think we're splitting hairs here. The chances of an undocumented immigrant getting into the military are slim to none. Sneaking through the cracks and managing to make a career out of it without getting caught would be a miracle. That's a dangerous game to play and I think the risk to reward ratio is pretty bad.
