Hi, I just wanted to make sure if travelling by amtrak within NY state is safe? Planning to take it from Penn Station (NYC) to Fort Edward-Glens Falls station. This is to go to Lake George.

Thank you.

(and yes, i tried to search for threads about amtrak but none is specifically about ny)

Penn Station in NYC is safe, I was there in 2008, (back when I did not have a drivers license) and no one was checking for statuses. Just stay away from taking a train near the "borders", Example Buffalo, NY.

About two years ago, I didn't know that they would check statuses at a Bus or Train Stations. I took a bus in Erie, PA to headback from college and before I boarded the bus they were asking everyone for their status. They asked me, "Are you an American Citizen?" I said yes... and they left me alone. The guy behind me was a chinese kid, and he said no, and they checked his passport, etc. When I took a transfer bus in Buffalo, NY there were Border Patrol there too, and they asked everyone as well. The difference in Buffalo, NY though is they asked me "What Nationality are you?" So I just replied with "American".

Anyways, you should not have a problem unless you are near the border of Canada or Mexico.

Thanks for the reply.

Penn Station is safe, but is Fort Edward safe? it's pretty close i think =\ I never took amtrak so I dont know where during the trip they tend to check.

(Damn, maybe I shouldn't go since I will be flying to Orlando, Florida a week later anyway.)

You will be flying... so that means you have a DL, so you should be fine.

I highly doubt they have Border Patrol in Fort Edwards. They have it in Erie, PA because its close to Canada, just over the lake. They have it in Buffalo, NY because of the same thing.

Anyways even IF they somehow have border patrol, the only thing they will do first is ask you a question. Thats when you tell them you "are" a citizen and as long as you can speak clear English, you should be fine.

Nah, I don't have a DL. I will be using a foreign passport to fly.

Answering yes to being a citizen is really risky though. Anyway, thanks for your input.

When I took the bus home from College, (was during spring break) I was not expecting there to be border patrol lol. I had never taken the bus in Erie, (only here in NYC) so I would have never imagined that there would be border patrol for a BUS of all things.

Anyways, I was lucky that I was thinking on my feet when I saw the border patrol officers and said a simple "Yes" when they asked me if I was a citizen. Seriously though, after I said "yes" they left me alone and did not ask me any further questions and proceeded to the next person. Like I said... its really not a big deal in my opinion. I talked about it with my parents when I got home, they were shocked that there was border patrol. My dad commented that he thought that it helped me alot that I do not look like I am a foreigner, and that there is no accent to my English. I am originally from Brazil by the way.

Good luck on whatever you decide.
