Hey all, I have been wondering about this for a while now.

I am currently working for a data entry firm as an independent contractor, and I know that once I make $600, I will need to file a 1099.

I've done some light research on this matter, but I need some confirmation. Can I just use my ITIN# as my EIN# without consequences? Or will I need a SSN#?

Thanks for the help.

Well from personal experience i can tell you that you won't have a problem with the IRS if you pay your taxes with an ITIN # or a SSN# all they care for is that you pay your taxes. So yeah go ahead and use your ITIN #.

Really? Cool. But won't it look "suspicious" to my employer? Or is using an ITIN# is nothing to worry about, documented or not?

I am pretty sure my employer won't check anything, just file it and move on.

You can get your ein fairly easy granted that you have a valid itin. Check out the following link for further info

Wait, so I need to get an EIN#, a number that is separate from my ITIN#? I thought I could use my ITIN# as an EIN#?

Well ein would be better in my opinion. Businesses use these so it doesn't draw as much attention to yourself as a itin would. If it ask for a ein and its no problem to get a ein as a dreamer with your itin, then just get yourself a ein.

Ok, so it looks like it'd be best for me to apply for an EIN#. I checked out the online application, and I am a bit confused. By all definitions, I am a sole proprietor, right? Also, I am technically starting a "new business"? I am a bit lost in this.

Awesome. Ok, am I starting a new business? I am in the "Why is the sole proprietor asking for an EIN?" step.
