Well, I guess everyone deals with things differently, and sometimes that really is something that crosses a person's mind. Whether or not they make a plan or carry out the action is another story though...

What would be a justifiable reason to commit suicide before returning to one's home country?

Hey now the question is legit..it was posted in response to someone who wrote about wanting to kill himelf. I said if you have reached that point, well it can't possibly be above thought to consider your home country and at least give it a try first.

The situation isn't the same for everyone. Remember, some of us came here to avoid being killed in our home countries. Why Uncle Sam would send his adopted child to be killed is beyond my reasonable thought, but I guess it's extremities like this that built this country.

I would definitely go back but I could understand if someone was depressed how they might feel regret and deep anguish of going back and perhaps uneasy that they didn't do "the right thing." (10 year ban anyone???) Suicidal people don't want to die, they want to escape their pain. Maybe they have other issues, and honestly being undocumented is an unnecessary added stress. No one asks for this, at least none of the dreamers did.

People also may have other circumstances that lead them to suicide. I've known dreamers who were not only undocumented but also were gay/lesbian/transgendered. That's a double dose of bigotry you have to endure from all sorts of people, even fellow dreamers themselves.

Back to the original point: I can understand why someone in this situation would want to end their lives rather than going back to their country of birth. Growing up believing you were part of this nation, working hard in school, volunteering in the community, only to find out later that you're looked down as a criminal by certain people and blame you for everything that has befallen this country. It's hard to ignore that type of hostility especially if it's coming from one of your neighbors, one of your peers, or even one of your closest friends who has it in their mind that "illegals" should have everything horrible happen to them short of being shot. It's even harder when you find out your "home" country is somewhere you could be killed or suffer even more dire circumstances than you have here, being undocumented.

It's easy to say to a suicidal person "just snap out of it" or "think of the starving children in Africa!". Severe depression doesn't function according to rationality, and speaking from experience, it is really hard to get out of that mindset without a great deal of help.

If you are feeling suicidal right now, please read this.

tl;dr version: It's a hard knock life. People deal with these things differently. Don't judge someone who is suicidal.

I agree with you, even though we are in a shitty situation, taking your own life just wont solve anything.

No, I wouldn't commit suicide. You (not you but the person who was thinking of suicide) need to give your life meaning. You are young and still have so much to learn and explore and no single person can complete you but selfishness can only get you so far. I haven't met very many selfish people that are happy. Life is about balance, love, exploration, communication. You fill in the blanks. I would try to see what is off balance with your life and go from there.

I understand that you think you have nothing else to do for the world or for yourself but that's not true. This is a perfect time to find something you're passionate about and pursue it. You could be out in the world helping people or creating art or music or literature, or researching something the world doesn't know about yet. You could join the military and help your country. You could move to a tropical paradise and waste away the rest of your natural life. You could donate yourself to be a subject in an experiment.

Making a drastic change in your life or moving to another country may help you get out of this mess. Please don't commit suicide. It's really not worth it. I know your perspective is a little crazy right now but wherever you go to after death you would regret it.
