Hello everyone!

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this site and how great it has a forum! My name is Daniel and I'm 21. My story is probably not different than anyone else's but I guess it's good to share one's own story.

I came to the US when I was 13 (Dec 2003) through a B-2 border crossing card (which expires on 2013) in hope of achieving a much better life status compared to the one I lived back in my Mexico. My dad had always the desire to come either US or Canada but God answered our prayer which had been always US. On 2003 my dad left us first so he could be ahead and have "everything ready" (house, job, school) and after 5 months we (mom, sibblings, me) met my dad at a border Mexican city. We entered through "la puerta grande" as someone could say and it was really exciting. I remember well I was very excited to know my new American school.

For the following year, we faced many hard, tough experiences including the deportation of my mother. I still remember how it broke my heart and I felt like an animal, not knowing what to do or who to talk to. A family from our former church helped us while my mom was in Mexico. But after 4 months (end of 2004) my mom was back with us ; I cried so much that day.

On that year, my first American brother was born and later on 2006 a second one. Anyone could say my parents planned to have my two brothers so we could benefit from several government programs but God knows that's not true.

On 2009 I graduated from a magnet high school (located at one city but transportation is provided for anywhere within my county) and on fall of the year I entered to the university. Here in Texas, we undocumented students benefit from the 2001 law by Gov. Perry that allows illegal people to enter to college without any problems (scholarships, loans are independent)

Not only have I been affected because of my lack of SSN but family problems have been there as well (I mean between my mom and dad) we have been through so much tough problems up to the point they were about to get divorced (or anything possible within US) Those familiar problems affected me during my senior year at high school that I just started to procrastinate. No, I do not want to say I'm blaming my parents because I indeed procrastinated because of my own fault. But when you get home from school and all you can keep hearing it's your mom crying, or both your parents shouting to each other, it's hard not to paying attention to that.

I lacked guidance and information so when registration began I could only registered for two classes. I applied to countless scholarships but it will always be the same problem: SSN. I guess I got frustrated that I gave up on looking for scholarships. My mom paid for my two classes. Due to financial problems I was not able to go back during 2011 and what's being part of 2011.

A few months ago, my dad met a social worker who is now sort of a friend of my dad. She heard my case and she volunteered to help me get back to school. One thing I'd like to mention is that I am shy and tend not to socialize with other people. However, once I get to know them well I am very friendly . Since the beginning of July she has been behind my ass to get me active again and speak up for myself, stop being shy and look out for myself.

So far, I'm already registered with three classes. I consulted my advising counselor and change my bachelor plan for an associate degree (2 yrs)- less classes, less money. My mom has been saving up so we're not worry that much for this semester. We still have to pay half (~$1300) by the 11th of August so I'm getting to know what I need to apply for a student loan by Wells Fargo.

There's so many things I need to do and catch up with for the time I didn't attend any institution but I hope, I really hope something may happen to all of us down the road, God willing.

I'm looking over several threads about scholarships for undocumented so that's a start but if you have recommendations for me to do or anything that could help me, please do comment and I really hope I can help someone as well!. Thank you for having the time to read my story and I really do hope to meet new people and if possible, make new friends here

Daniel

Hi, great to hear your story Daniel.

I know cash is tough, but you need a Bachelor Degree.

If you do an online search for a job in your field, you will see that most companies will want at least a Bachelor Degree, an Associate is basically nothing.

I recommend looking at MALDEF if you haven't already, they have a lot of resources on scholarships for people like us.

Good luck man, keep your hopes up, God won't desert us.
