Has anyone experienced their employer finding out about your status? Do they simply fire you?

I've been thinking about applying for some jobs in my field, seeing as I've read some of you that were able to land some awesome jobs.

But what will happen if they find out? Will they just not hire me? Or will something worse happen?

That happened to me when I worked at GameStop for a year. I got promoted to key holder and they checked me. My boss said he couldn't let me work until I provided a valid ssn so I acted surprised like wtf I don't understand that and I'd have to check that out (but of course I never got back to him, I just said who knows when it'll get fixed and we just mutually terminated my job basically pretending it was something that was out of my hands).

I played dummy but the awkward part was I'm sure he knew and we were good friends and we still talk but he just pretends it didn't happen and doesn't mention it when I see him. Kinda sad really; accepting a promotion being a bad idea.

Now I work at a local pc repair shop where so far (nearly 5 months) they haven't checked me.
