While doing my nursing application for California State University San Marcos I came upon this notice on their website regarding AB 540 students.

Quote:
Our Consortium of Clinical Sites require that all Nursing Program students obtain a 'negative' result on the required Criminal Background Check. For the Criminal Background Check to be completed, students need a valid Social Security Number, a valid F-1 Visa, or be a legal non-resident.

Until there is some form of Immigration reform to grant citizenship to AB 540 students, such students cannot currently be admitted to any of our Nursing Programs. AB 540 students may want to pursue a degree here at the University in another discipline, while also meeting the specific course requirements for the Nursing major, so as to be prepared for entry in the future to the Accelerated BSN program, once the law changes. We encourage such students to meet with a Nursing Advisor to plan out their coursework carefully.

We cannot anticipate when immigration reform will occur in this country, thus we encourage all AB 540 students to apply for admission to a Nursing program, when deemed eligible to apply, in the hopes that reform may occur prior to the actual admission process to the program.

Does this mean all Nursing schools in California will not accept me because I can’t do a background check?

I hope I’m reading the notice incorrectly because if not then I think I just wasted $150 bucks applying to three different schools.

I think it is possible to get accept, but I suggest you to consider other degrees that doesn't require background check.

I don’t know what to do now. I put all my eggs in one basket, and that was nursing. I don’t know what to change my major to now. I feel so lost.

I would investigate if "Consortium of Clinical Sites" is some kind of licensing body or if it's a policy, and also whether it applies to only that school, the whole CSU schools, or perhaps only public schools. Google it, go to the nursing office at the school and ask for someone knowledgeable to explain it to you. Basically, research the hell out of this roadblock and look for ways around it. Don't give up.

This is quite tough. Some dreamers will just have to wait. Until then, you better look for other options.
