Yes, did you apply from the U.S or did you go to your home country?

Congrats that you made it in. How much longer do you plan on staying here, however?

Congrats, Ali!

Anyway you could provide more details about the process for those of us interested in applying? Thanks

This is a big inspiration for all of us.

Come back and tell me how you did.

I'm going to try it for sure. Nothing to lose!

I always wanted to go to Quebec.

here it goes:

Applied to Washington adding a letter on 'humanitarian grounds' (told my story, basically an essay to hit the soul of whomever read it; Got denied, reasons:

My status in the US indicated the officer that I wasn't 'thrust worthy' and would over stay in canada.
Other reason was more up my alley (basically I left the states cuz I can't do research w/o papers); officer said I should try Mexico and/or another country (duh).

I also may have badgered them about my application cuz I didn't add a return envelope and they took forever to send my stuff; (check w/whichever embassy you are applying, they have different procedures).

It helps to have about 10k in the bank w/a 4-6 month account history. You really don't have to touch that money if you secure a position, but you're still gonna shell some coin on flights, applications, and probably your 1st tuition payment (if on payment plan) until the 1st financial aid kicks in. I start school monday :O

More details on that failure @ the link at the beginning of the thread.

So; basically I sent it thru the Mexican Embassy (expecting full well it wouldn't be processed in time, yet arrived one week before classes); the big thing is I left to Mexico about 3 wks ago to 'prove my seriousness about studying' and also to remove basically the only obstacle for which I was denied (being out of status). I considered just having someone send the ish under my name; but since I was gonna go for the F1 if denied, I didn't give a fuck at that point. So I guess what I'm saying here is you can ''leave'' to whichever country you are from to prove the point (IOW have someone else do it); but u gotta make sure all receipts and "To: and From:'' shit is under your name

Added the same damn thing on this application plus an explanation of why I thought the 1st reasons for denial were unreasonable and how I had removed my 'out of status' by moving to mexico.

Arrived at Vancouver today; the immigration officers were pretty damn laid back, approved like 30 visas while I was in line plus probably another 50 after I left. The guy I ended up interviewing with basically asked how long I had been in the states; why I had been out of status, why I didn't finish my Master's back home, and gave me my Student permit like it was nothing. I answered truthfully but kept it short. So basically what I'm saying is if you can connect at Vancouver to wherever you may end up at, it may be worth a shot paying the extra cost (it may have helped that I translated for some lady that spoke no English).

Kinda weird but I sensed these guys went out of their way to hand out visas....like there were people missing paperwork; the Mexican lady who spoke no English had absolutely nothing (in paperwork) from Immigration services; I dunno how that ended up after I left but they were really trying to help her. Some chinese girl had no home stay address (dunno what that means), but I think she was like a foreign exchange student and still got her shit approved.

Sorry about the train of thought typing but I haven't slept in 36 hrs and still gotta catch a flight.

I applied to McGill but no dice. Basically you gotta apply for the fall semester if you want to secure an advisor. That means having your paperwork in the University by April and February (for Toronto). I enjoyed learning a new Language and hoped I could tackle French next. Plus u know French Canadian girls and all.

Rule of thumb when contacting advisors: Call and email until you get a response; on your subject heading indicate the school you graduated from and show off your English skills on the message body yet keep it short. Make it custom to your professor as well, indicate why you are interested in their field of research(es).

God bless Canada.

So you have to go back to your country in order to get a Visa first. Okay, fair enough.

Not the end of the world.

Thank you and good luck.

Stick around.
