lie and say you are a US citizen i say. If you tell the truth, then you are gonna get detained. If you lie, they can't technically check the ID of US citizens anyway. But if you are caught you are in a world of shit...but then again you are in a world of shit anyway given your status so no big loss

I drove through that route (Dallas to Albuquerque) multiple times, never saw any kind of check point.
