My permanent residence is in Florida, and the university I attend is located in Chicago, 2-3 times a year I make a round trip flight that has been the case since 2007, they wont check anything when you arrive at the airport. It is far more risky to take the amtrak and greyhound mode of transportation than flying.

There have been just too many reports of border patrol boarding the buses with the sole intention of checking the migratory status of the people taking that mode of transportation, and it does not matter if you are close or far from the US-Mexico border, there is a story around here of someone that was caught coming back to Chicago from New York on either the greyhound or amtrak train.

Chicago, and actually cook county is considered by many to be a sanctuary city, S-comm is not being enforced, we have recently been able to pass the IL DREAM Act (thus going policy wise in the opposite direction than some other states), and we have a number of very active and visible organizations in town, I find it to be an easier place to live with it's also very thorough public transportation system.

If there is any worry at all, throughout that journey it involves the point where the TSA agent checks your picture ID, which would be the foreign passport to verify your identity to the name on the boarding pass, that is it.

It might be a good idea to see if you can find an org around your area or your state and ask them, send them an e-mail, inquiring about flying from the states airports, they should be able to give you the best possible response on that subject. But taking the amtrak/greyhound, we know that border patrol checks those modes of transportation at random.

Let us know what you find out, but it would be to your greatest benefit to ask questions to organizations in the area as they would be better prepared to answer your questions on the context of what they have observed in the area and the laws that have recently passed.

Thank you brother.

It is a risk to take the greyhound bus and Amtrak train but it is possible to survive it. How?

1) Don't look like a foreigner.
2) Answer the questions like you ARE an American citizen.

I didn't know that there was border patrol at a greyhound station when I took the bus to go home once from Spring Break. I was shocked.... but when they asked me, "Are you an American Citizen?" I simply said yes, and they moved on, and let me go. I was dumb enough to try and then question why they were doing these checks.... to which the guy rudely said to me, "Haven't you heard of 911 sir?", and then told basically to me to go away.

A kid behind me was Chinese, and he answered No to the question and was then harassed big time, and pressed on to show his paper work. There was also this one kid that I swear looked Mexican but apparently was from Hawaii, he was ok though and only got one question like me.

To my knowledge they only have border patrol in cities that are near the border.

When I took the Amtrak from New York City to New Mexico, there wasn't a single Border Patrol person.

Like I said just don't be suspicious and don't sound or look like a foreigner.

Hi everyone, I'm new member here. Is that safe to ride amtrak from Orlando Fl to Savannah Ga? Also how about rent a car when we reach Savannah, is it very crucial driving around with an expired DL and undocumented status? We are a little bit worried in everything since we've got a denial from INS because we have a small kid traveling with us. Thanks for you guys info..

Avoid Amtrak and greyhound at all costs it's known to be risky. My main mode of travel as mentioned above is flying, as long as it is from a domestic airport and not an international hub and a domestic flight your risk should be minimal. But you need a valid, unexpired passport, don't try to use any other foreign document or the expired drivers license.

As far as renting a car and driving in Georgia. I do not know how that works so I will let someone else answer that question.

PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE AMTRAK OR GREYHOUND!!!!!!

Flying is the safest way to travel within US, if you have valid foreign passport(which you can get)
TSAs just chek your name and ticket name.

I just traveled to LAX to Phoenix, Phoenix to Houston(Bush) and
Houston(Hobby) to Denver, Denver to LA past couple of days because of my grandma. I had zero problem travelling.
