I was doing some research and browsing through the forum and didn't find anything too specific so I decided to start a new thread. I had heard/read stories of people in NY who used an International Driving Permit to drive and they had no problems with the police. Looking more into this i found the following information on the NY DMV(http://www.dmv.ny.gov/license.htm#dr...omothernations) website:
Quote:
International Driving Permit: An International Driving Permit is not a driver license. The permit only verifies that you hold a valid driver license in your home country. Your foreign driver license, not the International Driving Permit, allows you to drive in NYS. Contact the authorities in your home country to get an International Driving Permit. If you are not a resident of the US, you cannot apply for an International Driving Permit in the US.

You are not required to have an International Driving Permit to drive in NYS, but the permit has value. The permit verifies, in several languages, that you have a valid foreign driver license. A police officer who cannot read the language on your foreign driver license can read the permit.
Does that mean it's actually legal to use a IDP and drive in New York? Can anyone attest that this works/doesn't work?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Yes, you need your foreign driver's license accompanying the IDP. IDP is only a translation of license. (ex. Hieroglyphic text on licenses) so the cop can read it.

That's what I'm using right now in CA.

CA DMV basically has the same rule.

Foreign License alone can let you drive, however IDP makes it more legit. Make sure to photocopy your passport ID too, so the cop won't get suspicious or have doubts about the authenticity of it.

If you ever get pulled over, you hand 3 things as your license ( Foreign DL, IDP, and Photocopy ID of your passport ). Oh and make sure you act and sound like a tourist.

Good luck!

If you have any further question please PM Mantequilla

Thank you for such a quick response. I will look more into this. It's somewhat comforting to know that even if i can't get a great job here after i graduate i can at least drive around.

If only the Mexican government could issue DLs at their consulates. I am pissed off at the fact that they are too cheap to provide a secure id that the US government could accept. Matriculas look fake as fuck! They should at least issue voters cards, those are legit!

Mexico drivers licenses are issued by the state you live in when in Mexico. The states are separate from the federal government, which operates consulates. You could get one if you find a way to sneak into Mexico then sneak back.

Nice picture.

I knew they are issued by the individual states. I was reading that D.F issues driver licenses with no expiration date on them. I do not know if it is true or not. Also they look as legit as American ones. If only I could get my hands on one of these.

My visa expired so that is not an option for me. If I did not have a job right now I would have long ago moved to Washington.

But come on! they should at least issue voter cards at the consulates. They just do not want people to vote! that is a load of crap!
