I was recently offered a trial position at an agency that thankfully agreed to pay me under 1099 independent contractor status if I were to be hired permanently. So hopefully everything goes well, and I get taken on as full time, but I am still confused about when to use a Tax ID number (TIN) and an Employer ID number (EIN). I did a search but there was some conflicting info.

I have a tax ID number, and I know when I go and do taxes I am going to ask to fill out a W9 and not a W2. But what should I put down on forms when it asks for a SSN or ID number? My TIN or should I get an EIN? Does it even matter?

Any help would be appreciated, especially if you've been through this already. Thanks.

Thanks for your well thought out, positive and informative response. Why would you even bother replying to this thread?

I'm asking a legitimate question about whether I should obtain an EIN for work and tax purposes from anyone who has ever been in the situation. I didn't ask for your snarky little comment. I'm finally getting a chance to use my degree and my skills after 3 years of being seriously underemployed and underpaid and I didn't need your negative attitude and toxicity bringing me down. You must be a joy to be around, good luck with that.

I am in the same process of obtaining an ITIN, and to my understanding you can use ITIN number for a 1099 form, I would suggest consulting a tax expert to get clear answer to your questions, sorry I couldnt be of more assistance.

Use your itin for the 1099 as SSN or ITIN

Use the EIN when you are employing someone and you pay them.

I could advice you more but im typing w an on screen keyboard, my laptop's broke yesterday

This is what I was able to find for you. This pertains to the I-9 form, there is a section on self employment.

From what I understand the ITIN is perfectly okay for the 1099.

Yup, you use your ITIN on your 1099.

I just filed my taxes. Holy shit, I wish I was Mitt Romney so I only had to pay 15%.

Great find. Thanks for posting. Anybody that has questions about working as an independent contractor should check it out.
