I recall hearing on the news that Texas would no longer offer in-state tuition, is it true? Also I'm wondering if you guys know about TASFA ? Which is like FAFSA but for Texas Residents. I've researched information and it's still not clear to me whether I qualify for it, since I am illegal. I'm a junior in high school, and I'm trying to gather as much information and trying to decide my plans for after high school. I'm number 7 in my class and my counselor said I'm in the top 1.5% although I don't see how that matters since there's very few scholarships for me. I'm really scared because my family is poor, and I don't know how we will pay for tuition. I'm still debating whether I should just go back to Mexico and go to college over there.

you scared me for a moment. but I hope that Perry will not take away a piece of legislation that he himself signed. it is all borrowed time. but with the rascals it should be almost half of tuition. money is indeed an issue so of have to suggest community college unless you'd want to pay a lot of money to a university. I think it is hard adjusting because one starts unaware of what to do in terms of money job to pay for school but our only option is to adjust evolve.and perfect our methods. the way I see it it isnt that bad when you compare the situation In tx to that of other states

Trying looking at scholarships from the following website: http://www.e4fc.org/studentresources...shiplists.html

And it is not just for "Bay Area" students as it states, but students on a national level as well.

Not true. There was some noise last legislative session about removing in-state tuition, but nothing happened. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board changed the rules slightly where now they're going to send you a letter every semester telling you to stop being illegal, but that won't change your eligibility for free tuition at all.

The Texas legislature meets for one 5 month session every 2 years so your tuition is safe through Spring 2013 at least.

You will most likely qualify for TAFSA.

Go to a community college for your first two years. You should be able to afford the $800 or so for tuition...

You should apply to the IVY's (minus Cornell, Brown, maybe Harvard), Pomona, Swarthmore, and Deep Springs if you can get above a 2100 on SAT. They will pay you to go to college. Let me know if you need any help.

I think you're understating how hard it is to get into an Ivy school. I had 2100+ SAT score but didn't get in, they require much more than that.

Don't worry about In-state being taken away from public Texas universities just yet. The threat will come in the 2013 legislative session. So if you're a graduating senior applying for college for the next fall semester, you will be given in-state tuition.

Dream act groups across Texas worked their ass off last legislative session to make sure in-state wasn't taken away and we'll do the same in the upcoming one.

Yeah SAT isn't everything but i got into four IVY's with a 2170. Of course, its only a fraction of what admissions considers. I'm just saying its worth a shot because you never know how lucky one can get.

Yeah dude just apply for TAFSA and you should qualify for aid. I went through the exact same thing my junior year dude. I know exactly what you're going through. (And congrats on the rank, I graduated 7 in my class).

I'm not saying the road you choose to go through will be easy, but I have chosen to go back to Mexico. I went to a community college for a semester and it was pretty cool, but you know, I couldn't drive, couldn't work, couldn't do anything legally so what's the point you know? I could have gotten into Baylor University and even SMU, but I couldn't afford to pay for the tution, let alone the classes.

It's a tough choice, so you have to really think about it.

With your rank and grades, I'm sure you can get a lot of scholarships for college. I suggest applying to University of Texas at Dallas. They are very generous with scholarships and aid. I'm planning to go there next fall because they offered me a $24,000 scholarship and my grades aren't even close to being perfect. (i'm only in the top 25%) I'm still waiting to hear back from their financial aid office to see if they're going to offer me with any other assistance. One of my friends (illegal) got a full ride there... and she is also just in the top 25% of our class. I suggest having a lot of extra curriculars and volunteer hours cause that helps a lot.
Oh, and don't worry, we still pay in-state tuition.

Omg I would love it if you would give me more information on how it went for you to apply for colleges. How did your friend get a full ride? I feel like I don't know a lot about all this stuff, and I should. Did you apply as an international student? Sorry for all the questions haha.
