Senate bill slots 55,000 tech green cards
Latest effort on green cards for science, technology, engineering and math graduates is from Republican Sen. John Cornyn

Computerworld - WASHINGTON - There's a new push in the Senate to set aside as many as 55,000 green cards to science, technology, engineering and math graduates -- so-called STEM workers.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) introduced a bill Tuesday to make green cards, or permanent residency, available to students who earn an advance degree, master's or Ph.D. from a research university, meaning a university that has received a federal funding for research.

To accomplish this, Cornyn's bill eliminates the so-called diversity lottery, which today makes 55,000 green cards available via a lottery, and makes those visas available instead to STEM grads.

The legislation, called the Securing the Talent America Requires for the 21st Century Act of 2012, or STAR Act, doesn't appear to increase the overall number of green cards allocated annually.
No loss for most of dreamers who don't come from DV-qualified countries, right?

Dreamers could benefit from this especially if the country was not listed in recent years in the DV.

Assuming if John Cornyn's bill includes a waiver for illegal students. I somehow doubt that.

And notice that the bill qualifies STEM graduates only from "research" universities which tend to be competitive to get in.

Could we qualify for this? what are the details. I will be getting my masters from a research uni. Hopefully this could some how give us a waiver.

Doubt it though.

They better have a provision for people like us.

has anyone read the text? Would this bill allow those of us who are currently undocumented apply for GC if all other requirements are met? I already have a masters from a top research school in one of the STEM fields. This could be my way out if they allowed dreamers to apply.

We need to get legalized by Rubio's Dream Act first. Then STAR will be our pathway to citizenship.

This link works for me - http://www.cornyn.senate.gov/public/...f-535ae95f39ed

I'm not sure how much it can help your status since most of the time you can't adjust status if you're already in the country illegally..
