Couldn't Colombians seek asylum back in 2000 or 2001?

We did not seek asylum because we weren't in danger, and my parents wanted to go back to Colombia. I think if you seek asylum, you cannot return to your country.

I came to this country because the economy went bad in Colombia (2000), and my dad thought he could find a better job here in the USA.

We did in 2001 and got denied :\
What sets me off is when people say "Oh come here legally, and do it right" and when we did we still got the middle finger lol
