you're confused!

USCIS provides you with the background check! they'll schedule a appt for you to get your biometrics done after you mail in your application. And the requirements are up on their website

They do have the official requirements. It's part of the instructions....You should download those too.

Maybe the confusion is arising from one of the many major events that are taking place across the country, where they are asking for a background check as a means of pre-screening the applicants and to better advice them, at least that is how it will work in the Navy Pier event in Chicago.

But, officially for USCIS, you do not have to provide any such documents unless you have been convicted or charged with any crimes.

If you have, you will go to the county where the charges where applied, the clerks office if I am not mistaken, and ask for a copy of those records, with dispositions, very important in the latter option as they will use those dispositions in their consideration for granting deferred action.

In any case, if you have ever been charged with everything, it is very very important that you seek assistance through a qualified and accredited immigration lawyer that may be able to advice you on the best course of action, please do your search for such lawyers carefully and if need be, consult with multiple lawyers, don't just go to the most advertised because sometimes they may not be the best source of quality information. trust me on that, it comes from personal experience.

Can you pick the appointment or pick a date that suits you?

I believe not but I am just curious.

What I am getting from the people I have spoken to... they tell you when and where and if you are not present in that place at that time they will deny your application....
