Rubio: "Romney's Latino comment a joke"

(CNN) - Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was joking when he said at a Florida fundraiser last spring that he would have a better shot at winning the presidency if he were Latino, Sen. Marco Rubio said Wednesday.

On a conference call with reporters, Rubio said that the comments - recorded secretly and published earlier this week along with other clips of the same event by a left-leaning magazine - were intended to be a line of humor.

"Well I think he meant it as a joke," Rubio said. "At least, that's how most reasonable people would take it."

In the fundraiser, Romney said, "My dad, you probably know, was the governor of Michigan and was the head of a car company, but he was born in Mexico.

"Had he been born of Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot at winning this, but he was unfortunately born of Americans living in Mexico," Romney said to laughter at the fundraiser. "They'd lived there for a number of years, and I mean I say that jokingly, but it'd be helpful if they'd been Latino."

Rubio, who is Cuban American and a rising star in the GOP, and Romney acknowledged the candidate was on the list of people he was vetting to join his presidential ticket.

The Senator from Florida said Romney has made a similar reference or joke like that in the past.

Romney is to speak Thursday evening at a forum hosted by the Spanish-language television network Univision, then hold a rally in Miami, Florida.

Maybe Rubio should not talk anymore this election season, if he wants to run for president in the future.

romney wants to be hispanic, and rubio wants NOT to be hispanic, they actually would have made the perfect partnership, they would have perfectly agreed to lie, change opinions, and turn on anyone at any given time

I can't disagree with the statement.

There were plenty of people who voted for Obama by sheer virtue that he was black; in the phenotype sense of being 'black'. His mother was white, and his father, whom he inherited his black phenotype from, was from Kenya. He isn't an African-American in the sense of having ancestors who were slaves in the US. He hasn't lived the life that other blacks in the US have lived - he really is just a Hawaiin who happens to be black. Yet he got support from, and continues to get support from, people by virtue of his phenotype. Similarly there are people *cough* certain republicans *cough* who oppose Obama by virtue of his phenotype, despite the fact his policies are little different than Bush Jr's.

If Romney was hispanic, as opposed to simply of Mexican nationality descent, he would definitively have a larger support from certain groups. It shouldn't be that way, but he makes a good point, joking or not, about the whole situation.

That said he's an absolute idiot. We'd be better off if Ryan, Romney, Obama and Biden were all launched into the event horizon of a black hole.
