Tax number?

My mother keeps saying I need some sort of tax number in order to be able to work. I have not heard anything about this. Is she right?

Does that come with the work permit? What can I do with the EAD alone?

No you need to go to the ssa and file an application to get a number. With the ead, you can just drive through Bp checkpoints

Do I file the application now or when my EAD arrives?

When your EAD arrives you can go ahead and go apply for a SSN (Social Security Number) at the closest SSA (Social Security Administration) near you.

Since your EAD will be new, they will have to wait 10 days before they can start verifying it and issue you you a SSN.

Can I start working with just the EAD? I'm worried because I got an internship already and I just did my biometrics today. I wonder if they'll accept that.

No. Because you need a ssn to be in payroll.

You might be able to talk them into letting you stay as an unpaid intern until you get the SSN? But keep in mind that it could easily be another month or two if you just did your biometric.
