Well, some Latin-American leaders were "red". Salvador Allende was a socialist. But, he was DEMOCRATICALLY elected. However, other people weren't red. Demanding alternative means for development and deviating from some of the principles of capitalism does not necessarily make you a "red." This was the case, like I said, in Guatemala and El Salvador.
Allende started nationalizing a shitload of industry and private land....his "democratic'' election barely edged the other candidate using KGB money that he himself requested.

and the Afghans are still pissed at the Russians...what's your point?

Listen, some of you guys seem to forget that the world was at war...they may have called it 'cold' but it was a war none the less. Ignoring Korea, and Vietnam, there were still multiple armed conflicts every where over turf up until the late 80's (afghanistan).....Mistakes were bound to be made on both sides, and I'm sure the CIA's field manual didn't involve killing innocent children or over-reacting to 'commie' acusations. But that's what happens when you fund 'allies'; you hope they work in your interest and don't screw you over (insert osama, noriega, et.al).

I'm not justifying the mistakes that were made; I just understand that they are bound to happen, but I'm glad the winning team came on top is all I'm saying (for both the US and those regions in danger).

Being a Mexican that knows the short end of getting your sovereignty stomped over doesn't just make me blind to history.
