I tried going to the Social Security office a while back for a replacement, since it IS my number after all (even if it would say "Not Valid for Employment"), the best they could do for me is give me a paper saying that this number belongs to me, although not an actual card. They told me just to come back once I get work authorization to get a replacement out. Very nice people and service in my experience.
