B.S. in biochemistry, pre-med student. Just a quick question: i have been told many times that going to med school is physically impossible without a green card. Do any of the pre-med students in DAP know a way to get around this, or we are still waiting for the DREAM Act to pass? Please do tell.
BS in Computer Science.. & Brother there is always a way for everything. You don't need a green card to go to med school.

Wow! hold on right there! PLEASE tell me how it works!? i thought i read some threads back in 2010 or 2009 that a DREAMer tried to apply for med school without green card but he/she got accepted but the school prevented the person from registering classes. So if anyone knows a way to get around this problem, I NEED YOUR help cuz becoming a doctor is my dream

I have an Associates in Nursing from NY. Which state did you get your license from? I haven't been able to take the NCLEX since they ask for your social security # and I didn't want to risk it. Also, do you know if there's a time period that you're required to take the NCLEX from the time you graduated? And if it becomes invalid after that time period? Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Wanting to go to med school, but if DREAM Act doesn't pass in 2 years, going to go teach biology.

You technically don't need a green card to get in to med school, but the competition becomes a statistical impossibility (only 20~30% of med schools accept foreign students, and each has about 2~3 spots, if that). Oh, and most wants the tuition up front, and you can't get a loan or scholarship.

In other words, impossible.

I was talking about this with my friend who is a doctor and working on a sub-specialty. We got in the friends zone because she rejected me after finding out about my dreamer status (so apparently you need a green card to date someone who is in med school too hah) but that's a different story.

ANYYYYHOOO, aside from the insane amount of money involved to go to med school, how much competition there is to getting accepted where every little blemish can destroy your chances of getting in, when you start your residency after med school, you are basically an employee of the hospital...granted you make a measly $35,000 a year but good luck doing that without a green card.

So technically, it's not IMPOSSIBLE, if you have a very rich uncle and are a genius, but the smart money would be to take a major that can stand up on its own and doesn't have a vocational requirement.

Deafening thought, you can apply for RN license with ITIN in Maryland. That's what I did. I am an RN as well with an Associates of Science in Nursing, then I did RN-BSN program and got my BSN this year. I got approved for DACA so I will be applying for jobs soon, once i get my SSN.

if you are applying for DACA, I would just wait till you get your SSN then take the NCLEX. Meanwhile, study hard!

Getting a loan doesn't seem impossible once we have our EAD and SSN. Still, things are much more easier to do with a green card. I'm also from NY. Plus, doing residency seems possible if you can work. The problem is hospitals might be considered as government department/ jobs, which will require green card to apply.

hospitals are not considered as a government department or jobs. Only the VA (Veterans Affair) system or county hospitals are government run. You should still be able to do residency and everything. I went through nursing school and did many internship in hospitals without much problem.

For those who are hoping to get into med school to be a doctor, contact E4FC, they have some resources and know people who were undocumented and went to med school.

So to get your RN license you can do it in a few states, the one that I did it through was Washington. I had heard during nursing school that after two years you must refresh some of your courses to take NCLEX but I am not sure if it was a state thing or if its an NCLEX thing, so I would just call the nursing board and ask. Washington was super nice about it, all I had to do was submit an extra form saying that I did not have an SSN and provide my ITIN. I took the NCLEX right out of school (graduated May 2012, took NCLEX August 2012) so I would look to figure out if there is an "expiration date."

A friend and I are getting ready to apply to medical schools and as some of you mention, yes do you do have to be a bit better than the competition but as most of you have already heard, medical school admission isn't black and white so honestly I feel that I have a shot at this specially with DACA. Now we have a SSN and we can apply for loans (maybe more expensive but possible) and we can work. This evens out the field a bit more than before. As you mentioned, hospitals are not government regulated and clinicals were possible. The only thing that stopped me other than VA was that I didn't have a SSN to do a second background check but soon I will and even if my EAD expires I will still be able to do backgrounds checks and do my clinical hours as a physician (hopefully). Additionally, visa sponsorship will be easy I believe so I think we are in a really good place right now! I am super excited to apply to medical school and I am happy to hear of others doing the same. Don't be discouraged by what people say, ask the questions yourself, sometimes people intentionally (or not) mislead you. Don't give up until you hear it for yourself! Good luck future physicians!

Then you don't have to worry about this crap. Also, if you find your course work too hectic, I suggest you drop finance or make it your minor and stick with Accounting.
He should drop his accounting major and stick with finance
