Question of work authorization and existing legit SSN

Biometrics were completed 9/24/12; case was sent to Nebraska and is unfortunately still pending in "initial review" status.

Question regarding work authorization & SSN:

I had a valid SSN that just wasn't valid for employment when I arrived here in the US. If my paperwork/background check, etc. work out and I'm granted work authorization, would it be safe to assume that I could use my existing SSN? Or will they issue me a new one?

You will keep the same number.

Once you get your EAD card, you will need to visit your local Social Security Administration office to update your work authorization status (for things like E-Verify) and to order a replacement card (if you don't have one, or just for record keeping). Luckily, you don't have to go through a 10 day wait.

I just went to the SSA office and they said I didn't have to do anything.
She said as long as name matches on both documents, I'm good to go on E-Verify.

Not unless its "valid for work only" stamped. But i think the consensus here is to get a new one so they can update your records

Did anyone have a Not for Work Purposes SS and work it? I'm scared. I was approved but did my taxes and everything with this social and I don't know if I can get in trouble for it. I wanna go to the social security office tomorrow.

you're good to go dude. If its a legit number, you're fine. Skip the SSA and go to the DMV instead. Congrats!!!!!

Yeah your card has to be updated to "Valid for work with DHS authorization"
